L'Ingratitude
L'Ingratitude L'Oiseau cheri que vous tenié en Cage, De vous Cloris, est en vain regretté [...]
F. Eisen Pater Pinx. L. Halbou sculp
A Paris chés Buldet, rue de Gesvres [c.1760]
Engraving, platemark 355 x 270mm (14 x 10½"). Trimmed to platemark on left; glued to album sheet at corners.
Scene in trompe l'oeil border showing a bird fleeing its cage, with verses below likening this 'ungrateful' bird to the way that a lover, 'who one makes happy, takes back their liberty'. Engraved after François Eisen (c.1695-1778), painter who specialised in such genre pictures in a light-hearted Flemish manner. Eisen's son Charles was also a notable artist, hence the need to identify Eisen as 'Pater' [father] on this print. Part of a series of prints in this format after paintings by Eisen, with texts focusing on love, beauty and deception.

A woman seals a letter to her lover; text below states that 'much better' than in centuries past where declarations of love were carved into trees, making them in the form of letters keeps them private. The text and image play on this ambiguity and our own uncertainty as to who the woman is writing. After a painting by Jean-Baptiste Santerre (1651-1717), Peintre Ordinaire to Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, who combined the northern tradition of imaginary portraits with the allegorical portraits then fashionable in France (as seen in artists such as François de Troy).

A family in a prison cell, a suckling mother looking enviously at the house martins that have built a nest in the window. As the artist specialised in Scottish historical scenes it is likely that this depicts the family of a Jacobite. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy. Frances Matilda "Fanny" McIan (c.1814-1897) was the first superintendent of London's Female School of Design, which was launched in 1842 to train women for industrial roles like porcelain painters. McIan expanded the curriculum to include more fine arts subjects, like oil painting and wood engraving, and was chastised for allowing her students to draw nude models.
