The spanish mule. Wilfred Fairclough (1907-1996) was a painter, etcher, watercolourist and teacher who was born in Blackburn, Lancashire. He left school at 14 to work in a mill and then trained as an audit clerk while attending evening classes at Blackburn School of Arts and Crafts, where he passed the Board of Education’s drawing examination in 1930, the year he was appointed part-time teacher at Blackburn. Determination gained him entry to the Royal College of Art’s engraving school from 1931 to 1934, where he excelled, under teachers Malcolm Osborne and Robert Austin. He was a Rome Scholar in Engraving in 1934 attending the British School in Rome from 1934 to 1937. Rome was a favourite subject, later replaced by Venice. He lived at Kingston upon Thames and joined the staff of Kingston School of Art in 1938 and was Principal there from 1962 to 1970, after which he was Assistant Director of Kingston Polytechnic from 1970 to 1972. He spent his wartime service in the Royal Air Force where he worked on models employed in planning the bouncing bomb attack on the Mohne dam. He then spent time in India. Fairclough was elected member of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1946 and member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1968. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and at the Redfern Gallery, as well as widely overseas. The Contemporary Art Society has bought his work and he is also represented at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has almost 60 watercolours which Fairclough completed during World War II for the Pilgrim Trust’s Recording Britain project.

A night view of a busy building where the viewer sees all the activity in the lighted rooms above the commercial premises below. Two women walking along the poorly illuminated pavement seem exagerated in size compared to the hairdresser's window the pass. The artist appears not to have made many prints but was known as a painter, printmaker and teacher. Baumann was particularly noted for her etchings, engravings and lithographs and lived in London where she studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Arts. Her work is represented in the collection of the Museum of London.

View on the Tigris river, which flows from Turkey through Iraq and into the Persian Gulf. The site depicted is believed to be the burial place of the biblical figure Ezra. The etcher Charles William Cain (1893 - 1962) travelled in the Middle East, and lived in Baghdad for some years. A student of Camberwell School of Art, he was then an illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesburg Star. During the Great War, he served with the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia until the Armistice. In 1920-21, he studied at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short.

A woodland scene; members of the travelling circus relax next to their caravan. The son of poor parents, Auguste Brouet (1872 - 1941), worked his own way through night drawing classes, and then the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He lived in poverty as an art student, but became well known to collectors due to the sincerity of his portryals of the street-peddlers, gypsies, street-musicians, beggars, and rag pickers, whom he would depict in the passages and places where they congregated. He became enthralled by the singers, dancers, and circus life of Paris. Having lived the in the poverty of those he was portraying, Brouet's work conveys a sensitivity and sympathy for his subjects uncommon amongst his contemporaries. Not only is he acclaimed as one of Paris's most important etchers, he has also etched approximately 20 plates of World War I, acclaimed not only for their historical accuracy and reliabilty, but for intense artistic quality.

Lined on both sides by a succession of palaces, built in general by great or wealthy Venetians of the past, the Grand Canal forms one of the main arteries of the city. Broad and dignified, there is room in it to catch the feeling of a peace which is almost literally musical. The lapping of the waters is gently audible,-the occasional song of a gondolier is sweet as the song of a bird! What life there is, forms, or necessity, a succession of scenes appealing to the imagination in a way far rmoved from the chaotic effects felt amidst noises and scenes in other cities. The large dome of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute, whose façade is shown in a previous etching, here appears against the distant sky.

Etching by William Walcot R.E (1874 - 1943), Scottish architect, who was described by Furst as 'next to Brangwyn the greatest decorative etcher this country has produced'. Walcot was in fact born in Russia and studied in St Petersburg and Paris, subsequently practicing architecture in Moscow before moving to London early in the 20th century. Walcot's training is evident in his prints, which are concerned with architecture and decoration rather than human life.

Atmospheric view of the spiralling staircases of the famous church of St.-Etienne-du-Mont in Paris. The church contains the shrine of St. Geneviève, patron saint of Paris, and contains the tombs of Blaise Pascal and Jean Racine. Jean-Paul Marat is buried in the church's cemetery. Etched by Charles John Watson (1846-1927). Born in Norwich, Watson was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and chief Founder and first President of the Norwich Art Circle. After leaving Norwich to move to London in 1888, he exhibited successfully at Robert Dunthorne's Gallery in Vigo Street.

This drypoint became the most exhibited of all of his prints, including at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1927, at the Bromhead Art Gallery exhibition in London in 1928, and at The Royal Society of British Artists in 1933.

William L. Wyllie [1851-1931] was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley’s art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870’s Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Wyllie died on the 6th April 1931 in Hampstead, and scouts from the 1st Portchester Sea Scout Troop, which he had founded, rowed his coffin across Portsmouth Harbour for his burial at Portchester Castle.
