Samson carries the gates to the city of Gaza up to 'the hill that is in front of Hebron', after escaping from a planned ambush (see Judges 16:1-3). Engraving by James G. S. Lucas (1831-4, fl.), mezzotinter who usually engraved after John Martin, and artist whose influence is evident in this print by Lucas. No other artist is mentioned, but as Richard A. Burnett noted, 'Lucas rarely acknowledged the artsts whose work he had so shamelessly plagiarised, as is the case with his copies of Martin's 'Illustrations to the Bible'.

A half-length portrait in oval of Charles Seymour (1662-1748), 6th Duke of Somerset, wearing lace cravat, armour, and sash. A politician and courtier, he helped the Whig Parliament into power in 1708 and rebuilt Petworth House in its current form. Known as "The Proud Duke," supported the Williamite cause during the Glorious Revolution. While initially a courtier to James II, he broke with him in 1687 by refusing to entertain the papal nuncio and later supported William of Orange. Despite his support for William, he was closer to Princess Anne and was not always in high favour with King William III. After Jan van der Vaart (1653-1727).

A detailed plan of a block of the Parish of St Giles in the Fields, on a scale of 16 feet to an inch. Orientated with north to the bottom, it is bounded by Drury Lane on the right, Macklin Street at the bottom, Cross Lane (now Newton Street) on the left and Parker Street at the top. An extension across Cross Lane shows Kennedy Court and Star Court, now the site of 'Hexagon Apartments at Parker Tower'. What is shown here as Shelton Street no longer exists. Of interest is the property of famous engineers 'Jeakes & Co'; and the 'Middlesex Music Hall' on the site of today's 'Gillian Lynne Theatre'. 'The Artisans' and Labourers' Dwellings Improvement Act 1875', which Benjamin Disraeli called 'the chief measure' of his administration, allowed local councils to buy up areas of slum dwellings in order to clear and then rebuild them.

The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). Two views of British ships in a river off the Bay of Bengal, probably the Hooghly River, with the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest. Both have pencil notes on the reverse. Hubert Cornish was the brother-in-law of Sir John Shore, 1st Baron Lord Teignmouth (1751-1834), who had been appointed as Governor-General of Bengal. Cornish accompanied his sister, Charlotte, on her voyage to join her husband in India, where Cornish was appointed as Teignmouth's Aide de Camp. Little else is known about Cornish, although a typed transcript of the journal he kept of his travels in India recently sold in a London auction, Forum.
