Thomas Wentworth, Baron Raby and third Earl of Strafford (1672 - 1739), diplomatist. In early life Thomas Wentworth saw much service as a soldier in the Low Countries, and was occasionally employed on diplomatic errands. From 1706 to 1711 he was Queen Anne's ambassador to Berlin, where he secured the services of Johann von Bodt to design for him Wentworth Castle, in the heart of Wentworth country in South Yorkshire, built, largely directed by letter from a distance, ca 1710-20. From 1711 to 1714 he was British ambassador at the Hague, and in 1711 he was created Earl of Strafford. The earl was one of the British representatives at the congress of Utrecht, and in 1715 he was impeached for his share in concluding this treaty, but the charges against him were not pressed to a conclusion. Strafford retired to Wentworth Castle. He was created by 'James III' ('The Old Pretender') on the 5 June 1722 'Duke of Strafford' in the Jacobite Peerage of England. Published for Knowler's 'Strafford Letters' 1739.

Fine engraving with large margins, first state before "publisher's address; after Godfrey Kneller". Plate 375 x 240mm. 14¾ x 9½".
Portrait of Thomas Wharton, bust in profile to left but looking at the viewer, wearing a long wig; in an ornamental oval with draped curtain beyond; the sitter's coat of arms below; a richly decorated purse in lower left. From Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'. Thomas Wharton, 1st Marquess of Wharton (1648-1715) was an English nobleman and politician. He was active before and during the Glorious Revolution. From 1708 to 1710 he was Commissioner for the Union of Scotland and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and he was also known for his love of horse-racing. Taken from the Kneller Kit-Cat Club portrait. Christopher Catling was the keeper of a pie-house in Shire Lane, by Temple Bar, where the club originally met hence "Kit-Cat" being his name abbreviated. The 18th century English club had strong political and literary associations, committed to the furtherance of Whig objectives.

His Royal Highness William Duke of Gloscester.
G. Kneller Eques pinx. I. Smith fec:
[John Boydell, c.1760.]
Mezzotint. 200 x 150mm (8 x 6"). Small margins.
A half-length portrait of Prince William Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700), son of Princess Anne and George of Denmark. He was viewed as a Protestant champion and his birth seemed to cement the Protestant succession as established in the 'Glorious Revolution'. He died at the age of 11, before Anne came to the throne, so the Protestant line of the House of Stuart lost its only chance if continuation. So as not to revert to a Catholic state, Parliament chose to pass the Act of Settlement 1701, which settled the throne of England on Sophia, Electress of Hanover, granddaugther of James I, and her Protestant heirs.

Rare mezzotint, platemark 335 x 250mm (13¼ x 9¾"). Thread margins; fine proof before letters; some marking in centre. Collector's stamp of the Royal Library, Windsor lower right.
Dudley Woodbridge (d.1721), director general of the South Sea Company (referred to on the lettered state of this print as the Royal Assiento Company), judge-advocate, and member of the 'Society for Propagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts'. Woodbridge sat for Godfrey Kneller in London, holding his South Sea Company commission in his hand, testifying to the importance he attached to the post and Britain's grand vision of the riches that Spanish American trade would bring. At this time Barbados rather than Jamaica was the primary hub of the South Sea Company. Imagined view of ships on the Atlantic through window.

Christopher Wren
Christopher Wren
G. Kneller Pinx [...] T. Holloway Sculpt
Published as the act directs by T.H. Holloway & the other Proprietors April 25th 1798
Line engraving, platemark 230 x 185mm (9 x 7¼"), with very large margins. Repaired tear along platemark on left.
Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), architect, mathematician and astronomer best-known as the architect of St Paul's cathedral and the City churches built following the Great Fire of London. Wren was a man of many interests rather than one specialism, who fostered talent wherever he found it (Hawksmoor is the classic example), but left no school of followers. Engraving after a detail of the 1711 portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller (London, National Portrait Gallery), cropped to exclude the plan of St. Paul's Cathedral on which Wren's hand rests in Kneller's portrait. The print was published as a plate to J.C. Lavater's 'Essays on Physiognomy'.
