Vanlo Pinx. J. Faber fecit.
Sold by C. Hitch in Paternoster Row, London, and by S. Parsons at Newcastle Under Lime.
Mezzotint, platemark 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Small margins; glued to backing sheet at corners; rubbed.
John Leveson-Gower, first Earl Gower (1694-1754), politician. Leader of the Tories in the Lords in the 1730s, after Walpole's fall he was the one Tory to take high office (as lord privy seal and a privy councillor, from 1742) in the new ministry, as delebrated here. However, he resigned in December 1743, soon after this print was published. He subsequently regained his position as lord privy seal and held it until his death. Gower's proximity to the whig administration provoked suspicion that he had deserted Tory principles (Dr Johnson included him in his dictionary definition for 'renegado' although the printer removed the reference).

Painted by J. Northcote R.A. Engraved by H. Dawe
[n.d., c.1810]
Mezzotint with very large margins, rare; platemark 505 x 315mm (19¾ x 12½").
Girl in Greek dress, with a peacock to her right and a plant to her left. After James Northcote (1746-1831), painter and author. The engraver Henry Dawe (1790-1848) was part of a family of engravers, who like his brother George spent many years working in St Petersburg. Unfortunately during his career the technique of mezzotint, demonstrated so well here, went into decline as it was supplanted by lithography and engraving onto steel plates, both of which enabled publishers to make many good impressions whereas mezzotints yielded very few.

Engraving. Platemark: 530 x 390mm (20¾ x 15"). Light foxing. Trimmed to plate at sides.
Portrait of William Wyndham Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville (1759 - 1834). He wears a long lace cravat and ruffles, and a heavy black brocaded silk Chancellor's robe with gold lace trimming on collar, facings and sleeves. His right hand clasps an upright brass bound volume standing on a table to left, on which are also a bundle of papers tied up with tape. Curtain behind to right, and to left, a view of Christ Church seen through a window. Grenville, William Pitt's first cousin, served as Speaker of the House of Commons (1789) and Foreign Secretary (1791-1801). The protégé and loyal follower of his cousin, Grenville was angered by Pitt's failure to oppose Addington and broke with him to join Fox and Grey in opposition. It was as head of the 'Ministry of All the Talents' coalition government, following Pitt's death, that Grenville was Prime Minister from 1806 to 1807. A reluctant leader, he resigned over George III's refusal to agree to Catholic emancipation. His administration nevertheless saw the abolition of British participation in the slave trade. Edmond Halley (1656-1742), astronomer. He went to the University of Oxford, where he studied the theories of Sir Isaac Newton. Because he was so intrigued with these theories, it inspired him to write the Principle which he published with his own money in 1687. In 1721 he was made Astronomer Royal and began an 18 year study of the moon's complete revolution through its ascending and descending nodes. During his life he also wrote another important treatise called Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy). It was started in 1682 and published in 1705. In this he mathematically demonstrated that comets move in a elliptic orbits around the sun and how over time they would pass the same point. He had such an accurate prediction that when the comet (now Halley's Comet) returned in 1758, it validated his theory. Engraved from a portrait by Thomas Murray (Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford). Murray's painting shows Halley pointing to a globe with buildings behind him, although the composition has been reduced and the background removed here.

Fran.s Cotes Pinx.t. Miller fecit.
London, Printed for John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill.
Mezzotint. 325 x 225mm (12¾ x 9"), with wide margins.
Elizabeth Gunning (1733-90) met James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Argyll, at a party in London. Robert Walpole reported that he insisted that they marry that night, and called for a local parson to perform the ceremony. However, without a license, calling of banns and a ring, the parson refused, so they married that night in Mayfair Chapel. Her sister Maria (1733-60) was also a beauty who married well, in her case George William Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry. Andrew Miller (d.1763), was an engraver in Dublin. Challoner Smith notes 'Nearly all the prints by Miller are of very great rarity' (p.921).

Vandyke Pinx.t
[Laurie & Whittle 1794]
Rare mezzotint, sheet 315 x 230mm (12½ x 9"). Trimmed inside platemark lower edge, losing publication line; glued to backing sheet.
William Harvey (1578-1657), physician and discoverer of the circulation of the blood. While Harvey's discoveries are now universally acknowledged, he met with much opposition during his own time. This portrait wrongly claims to be after van Dyck- more likely the source image is by Cornelis Janssens. The engraving is by James MacArdell, but he left the plate unfinished at the time of his death. This is the published state (after additional work by another hand), issued by Laurie & Whittle in 1794.

Mezzotint. 510 x 350mm (20 x 13¾"). Wear in very large margins.
Reginald Heber (1783-1826) was the Church of England's second Bishop of Calcutta. His missionary hymn 'From Greenland's Icy Mountains', written in 1819 for a service in aid of the 'Society for the Propagation of the Gospel' in Wrexham, was widely sung until recently, but lost favour when it was denounced by John Betjeman and Gandhi as patronising, particularly the line ''the heathen in his blindness [bowing] down to wood and stone''. Other hymns, for example ''Holy, Holy, Holy'', remain popular. First published by Reynolds in 1824.
