Ant. Canova inv. e marmo di grandezza naturale. G. Toignoli dis. Dom. Marchetti incise.
[n.d. c.1817].
Engraving and etching. 400 x 545mm (15¾ x 21½"), with large margins. Creasing and marking in top margin. Repaired tear in top margin.
Sculpture of a naiad, reclining on a lion skin while a young winged cupid plays the lyre at her feet, seen from behind. Embedded in the naiad's rocky couch is an over turned jar, from which flows a spring of water; while Canova (1757-1822) was content to call his subject a nymph, his friend and biographer Leopoldo Cicognara more accurately calls her a naiad, a type of nymph that presides in fresh water, prompted by the carved detail of flowing water. Antonio Canova's original sculpture, commissioned by Lord Cawdor in 1814, is a variant of Guido Reni's painting 'Venus reclining with Cupid' (c.1639); the sculpture is currently part of the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace.
From the Berkeley Collection, Spetchley Park.

Representation of a Scene of the County Naval Free School on Waste Land.
S.H. Grimm Pinxit. Fran.s Chesham Sculp.t.
[London: Marine Society, 1783.]
Engraving. 380 x 470mm (15 x 18½"), with good margins. Margins chipped and age-toned. Repaire tears. Abrasion and hole in right, within the tree. Left corner repaired crease.
A scene of a proposed free school for poor boys, preparing them for naval life. It shows the boys using apparatus for training for loading canon and winching an anchor, drilling and using navigation instruments, as well as ploughing and other agricultural activity. This plate was published in 'Proposal for County Naval Free Schools, to be Built on Waste Lands', by Jonas Hanway, written for humanitarian as well as patriotic reasons, the year that the American Revolutionary War ended in failure. After spending more than the year's income on the society on preparing the book (for which Hanway was censured), it was issued to privy councillors, lord lieutenants, influential MPs and admiralty and naval boards. However the plan was downsized by the society, and a single training ship was commissioned, anchored at Greenwich. As well as founding the Marine Society in 1756 (to procure seamen for the Seven Years' War), Hanway (1712-86) was a vice president of the Foundling Hospital, instrumental in the establishment of the Magdalen Hospital and a commissioner for victualling the navy (experimenting with ways to alleviate scurvy amongst seamen). He is said to be the first male Londoner to carry an umbrella, facing down heckling hackney coachmen.

A topless women attempts to drag a clothed man into bed with; she begs that he help her 'evade the tax upon the maids'. In order to finance the war against the rebelling American colonies, the government proposed a servant tax, which was extended to women servants in 1785. This caused huge uproar as maids were commonly owned by the middle class and were less likely to be a symbol of status - unlike male servants. The tax on female servants was successfully repealed in 1792. Published in 'The Ramblers Magazine, or, the Annals of Gallantry, Glee, Pleasure and the Bon Ton' (1784-1791). [London, n.d. 1784].
Engraving. 110 x 175mm (4¼ x 7") very large margins. Nicks and creasing around the edges. Foxing along lower margin and some staing in right margin.
A women, Perdita, being driven in a carriage drawn by a pair of goats. Her footman is handing her a 'Grant of £60,000' while a 'Royal favour' sleeps atop the carriage. Perdita likely refers to the actress and poet Mary Robinson (1757-1800), who earned the nickname for her role as the heroine in Shakespeare's 'A Winter's Tale' in 1779. She was also known as the 'English Sappho' and was the first public mistress to George IV while he was still the Prince of Wales. Here 'Florizel', the leading male part of the Shakespeare adaptaion, refers to the prince, as it was rumoured she first caught his eye after her famed performance. Published in 'The Ramblers Magazine, or, the Annals of Gallantry, Glee, Pleasure and the Bon Ton' (1784-1791). The magazine's publishers explain that it was 'calculated for the entertainment of the polite world, and to furnish the man of pleasure with a most delicious banquet of amorous, bacchanalian, whimsical, humorous, theatrical and polite entertainment.' The Augean Stables.
The Augean Stables. Rattlesnake or Adelaide Punch No. 1.
JH [monogram].
[Adelaide: Haddrick and East] Thursday, January 24, 1878.
Lithograph. 275 x 425mm (10¾ x 16¾"). Trimmed, losing explanatory title, split in centre fold repaired, laid on archival tissue.
An allegorical figure of Adelaide thanks Hercules (holding a theatrical mask over his face), for cleaning out the ghostly figures of 'Fever', 'Contagion' and 'Malaria', referring to 'Mr Clark' and asks if he can help to get rid of another nuisance. A bearded man, possibly journalist John Howward Clark (1830-78), sits to one side. Unfortunately a second, explanatory title has been lost. An extremely rare satire from the first issue of the 'Rattlesnake or Adelaide Punch', a fortnightly Australian humorous magazine. It survived for only a few issues, before failing and being taken over by the printers, Scrymgour and Sons. Renamed 'The Adelaide Punch', it lasted until 1884.

Having been a member of ''Hague’s Georgia Slave Troupe'' (when it included white performers), he came to Australia via South Africa in 1874. After a failed attempt to run a photographic business in Melbourne he became a huge star with ''Hiscocks' Federal Minstrals'' in the 1880s. Read retired in 1903 and moved to Adelaide where he taught singing. This portrait is probably from the cover of sheet music.
