William Lilly (1602-81), the most important English astrologer of his time, was a great influence on modern fortune telling. He published an annual almanac that sold 30,000 in 1659. In 1652 he published images of a city on fire; he was later called in for questioning by the Parliamentary committee investigating the causes of the Great Fire of London. This portrait was the frontispiece to his 'Christian Astrology' of 1647.

To make a lithograph, an image is created on a slab of porous limestone, which is then imprinted on sheets of paper using a process based on the antipathy of grease and water to distinguish between inked and non-inked areas. Rudolf Ackermann, publisher of this print, was one of the first publishers to use lithography on a large commercial scale.

The crest of the Pavers company with a pair of gryphons a chevron panel with baskets of pickaxes shovels and spades. In addirion to constructing streets and pavements, the Company was responsible for removing scavenging pigs. Various craft guilds were established in London as early as the 12th century, later becoming known as City Livery Companies because they often wore a distinctive livery or uniform. The companies decided who could work or trade in their crafts, controlling prices and wages, working conditions and welfare. In return for exercising rigorous quality control they received monopoly powers. In continental Europe, various revolutions in the 18th and 19th centuries swept away the guilds, but in England they continued, and several new Companies have appeared in recent years.From "Londons Armory Accuratly delineated in a Graphical display of all the Arms, Crests, Supporters, Mantles and Motto’s of every distinct Company and Corporate Societie in the Honourable City of London".

Johann Casper Heilmann [1718 - 1760], a Swiss painter and draughtsman working in Rome and Paris. Johann Elias Haid [1736 - 1809] was a German engraver and publisher. Son and pupil of Johann Jakob, he published his own prints in Augsburg. These pictures were produced in the same year the Society moved into a purpose built home, designed by John Adam. The Honourable Society of Arts Manufacturers and Commerce, was founded by William Shipley as a fund to support improvements in the liberal arts, sciences, and manufactures. In 1758, the Society awarded medals divided into catagories: Agriculture, Chemistry, Colonies & Trade, Manufactures, Mechanics, and Polite Arts (painting and the plastic arts). Samuel More was secretary to the society between 1770 and 1773, and was one of the most important supporters of the society's awards.

The illustration shows Victorian ladies and gentlemen admiring a rather elaborately-decorated horse-drawn fire engine; list of prizes won by the engine at various industrial exhibitions below. Merryweather and Sons, one of the leading makers of fire engines throughout the 19th century.

A man using a yoke to carry two buckets of milk. A 'G.F. Pidgeon' designed medals, for example one struck by the London Highland Society in tribute to the 42nd Regiment's action at the Battle of Alexandria, March 1801, with a portrait of Sir Ralph Abercromby.

Bouchardon executed drawings of Paris street merchants, Cris de Paris, that were widely distributed as engravings; some figures were reproduced in porcelain by the Meissen porcelain manufactory.

[The Newbury Coat.] To Robert Throckmorton Esq.re Buckland House Farringdon This Print respresenting the beginning progress & completion of an extraordinary undertaking to prove the possibility if Wool being manufactured into cloth and made into a coat between sunrise and sunset, which was successfully accomplished on Tuesday 25th June 1811, Is respectfully dedicated his most obliged and humble Servant John Williams Sand Steward to the late Sir John Throckmorton.

A composite image showing a race to create a wool hunting coat from scratch in one day, held in Newbury Berkshire. The origin of the event was a comment made by John Coxeter, owner of Greenham Mills in Newbury to Sir John Throckmorton: 'So great are the improvements in machinery I have lately introduced into my mill, that I believe that in twenty-four hours I could take the coat off your back, reduce it to wool, and turn it back into a coat again'. Throckmorton calculated the time required for the various processes, accepting it could be done. Shortly after Throckmorton made a wager a thousand guineas that at eight o'clock in the evening of June the 25th, 1811, he would sit down to dinner in a well-woven, properly-made coat, the wool of which formed the fleeces of sheep's backs at five o'clock that same morning. A holiday was declared so the town could watch (greasy-pole climbing and fencing competitions can be seen to the right), and the race was on. Starting at five in the morning, Coxeter presented the coat to Throckmorton at 6.20, who put the garment on before over five thousand people, and sat down to dinner at eight o'clock in the evening. The sheep that provided the wool were roasted for the spectators. The 'Newbury Coat' is still owned by the Throckmorton family; an identical coat, made in a 1991 re-enactment, is in the West Berkshire Museum in Newbury.
