Anne 'Ninon' de Lenclos (1620-1705), French author, courtesan, freethinker and patron of the arts. Portrait study by Thomas Worlidge Senior (1700 - 1766), 'the English Rembrandt' and a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. This plate was seemingly not offered for sale in Mary Worlidge's 1767 sale of Worlidge prints. Previously in the collection of William Richardson, printseller and author of a 'Biographical History of England' in seven volumes (1804). Richardson died c.1812 and his stock was sold over eleven sales between 1812 and 1823.

Rembrandtesque print by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) who specialised in etchings either copied from, or in the style of Rembrandt. Born in Peterborough, Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. His widow issued his plates in 1766 and 1767 afater his death with added numbers in the top right corner to correspond with the numbers in the catalogue of his prints which she produced. This is a believed to be an early state before numbers added, as even though the print is slightly trimmed, the numbers would be visible if present.

After his death, his widow published further impressions of his plates, adding new numbers to the plates to correspond with her own catalogue numbers. In this instance the '5' was etched by Worlidge himself, with the '17' added for posthumous impressions.

Portrait supposedly representing Titus Oates, best known as an informer against Catholics, although quite different to other portraits of him. Oates was expelled from the navy for homosexual practices and the DNB notes that 'early writers were repelled as much by his homosexuality as by his personality'. Etched by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), the 'English Rembrandt' and a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. Lifetime impression.

Rembrandtesque print by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) who specialised in etchings either copied from, or in the style of Rembrandt. The headgear worn by the figure here is adapted from Rembrandt's 'Second Oriental Head' (itself based loosely on a print by Lievens).

Bust portrait turned to right to face the viewer, a heavy round collar and chain around his neck, thick dark hair. By Thomas Worlidge Senior (1700 - 1766), probably a later state, with evidence of re-working to the sitter's face. After a painting in a private collection, probably an eighteenth century copy of a painting formerly attributed Rembrandt (1606 - 1669). Collector's stamp to verso.
