The Rt. Hon.ble Edward Earl of Orford Viscount Barfleur & Baron of Shingey &c. He was Admiral of the English Fleet at the fight with the French in the Bay of La Hogue in the Year 1693.
Tho: Gibson pinxit Geo: Vertue Sculpsit 1716
Engraving, platemark 380 x 280mm (15 x 11"), with very large margins.
Admiral of the Fleet Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, PC (1653-1727), First Lord of the Admiralty under King William III. Russell was named Lieutenant at the age of eighteen and saw active service in the North Sea before serving in the Mediterranean in the operations against the Barbary Pirates with Sir John Narborough and Arthur Herbert (1676-82). In 1683 he fell into disfavour with Charles II after the discovery of his connection with the Rye House Plot. In 1688, Russell was one of the Immortal Seven, a group of English nobleman who issued the Invitation to William, a document asking William of Orange to depose King James II. In the subsequent War of the Grand Alliance, Russell served at sea, commanding a fleet after 1690. In 1692, Russell was Commander-in-Chief of the Anglo-Dutch force that fought the French fleet at Barfleur, and destroyed much of it at La Hogue, his victory there being the decisive naval battle of the war. Russell became First Lord of the Admiralty in 1694, remaining in that post until 1699. He served in the Mediterranean from 1694 to 1695 and was created Baron Shingey, Viscount Barfleur, and Earl of Orford in 1697.

Edward Russell, earl of Orford (1652-1727), naval officer. In 1671, Russell was made lieutenant at the age of eighteen. He was promoted to captain in the following year. In the third Anglo-Dutch War he saw active service in the North Sea, before serving in the Mediterranean with Sir John Narborough and Arthur Herbert from 1676 to 1682. He served on the Tangier station in 1680 (it was then a British possession) and acquired a substantial fortune through illicit trading. This fortune was believed by Pepys to have been the reason why Russell resigned his command in 1683 after the discovery of the Rye House Plot. In 1688, Russell was one of the Immortal Seven, a group of English noblemen who issued the invitation to William of Orange to depose King James II. The Siege of Acre of 1799 was an unsuccessful French siege of the Ottoman-defended, walled city of Acre (now Akko in modern Israel) and was the turning point of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt and Syria. A Royal Navy flotilla under Commodore William Sidney Smith helped to reinforce the Turkish defences and supplied the city with additional cannon manned by sailors and marines. The seige was eventually raised and Napoleon withdrew to Egypt.

Sir Edward Spragge (c.1629-73), naval officer. In his early career Spragge is said to have spent time as a slave in Algiers, and after marrying the daughter of the governor of Dunkirk he commanded a French privateer, which was badly damaged by an English frigate. He then joined the navy and was knighted for his gallantry in the battle of Lowestoft in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. He was made a scapegoat for the 'division of the fleet' which precipitated the Four Days' Battle during the same conflict, but was exonerated following a parliamentary enquiry. Sprague subsequently served as ambassador to the Spanish Netherlands, and as admiral of a fleet fighting the Algerian corsairs (he won a spectacular victory over the Algerian fleet at Bugia Bay in 1671, which led to the signing of a peace treaty). In the Third Anglo-Dutch War he was made admiral of the blue after distinguishing himself in the battle of Sole Bay, but was drowned in the battle of Texel following a private battle with Cornelis Tromp. He was buried at Westminster Abbey.

TW [Thomas Worlidge, c.1758]
Etching, platemark 100 x 80mm (4 x 3¼"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet; fine impression on white laid paper.
Admiral Richard Tyrell (1716-66). According to O'Donoghue this print was issued with an account of his exploits when commanding the 'Buckingham' on a separate plate. The text recorded in Dack's Worlidge is probably copied from that account: '[Tyrell], in the ship of War of 64 Guns, 472 men, gave chase to a Fleet of Ships carrying Provisions from St. Eustatia to Martinico. The Merchant Ships made the best of their way with one of the Frigates, whilst the Florissaux of 74 Guns, 700 men, with two Frigates carrying 60 Guns and 600 men lay to in the line of Battle ahead. The Buckingham alone bore down upon the Three, attached and (after an obstinate engagement) defeated them on the 3rd of November, 1758. Captain Tyrell afterwards became an Admiral.' Etching by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), known as 'the English Rembrandt'. Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married.

Sir Charles Wager (1666-1743) was a British Admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty between 1733 and 1742. He was grandson of John Wager, mariner of Rochester in Kent, and son of Charles Wager (1630-1666), captain in the Navy, and Prudence Goodsonn. He served chiefly in the Mediterranean, gaining promotion to captain in 1692 and rear-admiral in 1707. His most famous exploit, known as Wager’s Action, was on 28 May 1708 aboard the Expedition, when he defeated and destroyed part of the Spanish treasure fleet at Cartagena, Colombia. This made him a wealthy man and he was knighted in 1709. He was promoted to admiral in 1731 and was also Treasurer of the Navy.

Mark Oates Pinxt. Jas. Fittler sculpt. Engraver to the King.
Pub. Octr. 1. 1799, for Mark Oates, by J. & J. Boydell No. 90, Cheapside; & at the Shakespeare Gallery, Pall Mall, London.
Fine engraving. Plate 445 x 328mm. Sheet 685 x 503mm. Scuffed and some tears around the edge of the sheet.
Sir John Borlase Warren, 1st Baronet (2 September 1753 - 27 February 1822), was an English admiral, politician and diplomat. He entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1769, but in 1771 entered the Royal Navy as an able seaman; in 1774 he became member of Parliament for Great Marlow; and in 1775 he was created a baronet. His career as a seaman really began in 1777, and two years later he obtained command of a ship. In April 1794, as Commodore of the frigate squadron off the north west French coast assisting in the blockade of Brest, Warren and his squadron captured a number of French frigates. In 1795 he commanded one of the two squadrons carrying troops for the Quiberon expedition and in 1796 his frigate squadron off Brest is said to have captured or destroyed 220 vessels. In October 1798 a French fleet, carrying 5000 men, sailed from Brest intending to invade Ireland. The plan was frustrated in no small part due to the squadron under his command. In 1802 he was sworn of the Privy Council and sent to St. Petersburg as ambassador extraordinary, but he did not forsake the sea, and in 1806 he captured a large French warship, the Marengo at the Action of 13 March 1806. He became an Admiral in 1810, and was commander-in-chief on the North American Station in 1813-1814. He died on 27 February 1822.
