One barber uses a ladder to reach the top of a woman's monstrous wig, as another uses a sextant to guide him. 'The happy invention of Monsieur Catogan' was the ribbon used by General William Cadogan (1st Earl Cadogan) to fix his long hair back. It was known in France as a catogan, which also became the word for any hairstyle that raised the hair from the nape of the neck.
