Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) the German Philosopher who researched, lectured and wrote on philosophy and anthropology during the Enlightenment. His major work was the 'Critique of Pure Reason', which aimed to unite reason with experience. One of a number of stipple heads of Kings and Queens of similar format printed on quarto sheets, by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810. They probably appeared as illustrations to the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature ... Embellished by ... engravings. Compiled ... by John Wilkes'.

Charles Dietrich Eberhard Konig (1774-1851), a German naturalist who came to England in 1800 to organize the collections of Queen Charlotte. He then became assistant to Dryander, librarian to Joseph Banks, before beoming assistant keeper of natural history in the British Museum in 1807 and keeper in 1813. In 1837 the Department of Natural History was divided into three branches; Konig took charge of Geology and Mineralogy, a post he held until his death. His 'Icones fossilium sectiles' (1820-5) is a classic text in that field. 'E.H. Eddis' is likely Eden Upton Eddis.

Portrait of the 'father of modern chemistry', who was also administrator of the 'ferme génerale', which during the ancien regime collected duties on behalf of the king. He was guillotined in 1794. Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794) was a French nobleman prominent in the histories of chemistry and biology. He stated the first version of the law of conservation of mass, recognized and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783), abolished the phlogiston theory, helped construct the metric system, wrote the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He was an investor and administrator of the "Ferme Générale" a private tax collection company; chairman of the board of the Discount Bank (later the Banque de France); and a powerful member of a number of other aristocratic administrative councils. All of these political and economic activities enabled him to fund his scientific research. At the height of the French Revolution he was accused by Jean-Paul Marat of selling watered-down tobacco, and of other crimes, and was guillotined.

Antonie Philips van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) the Dutch tradesman and scientist who is known as the 'Father of Microbiology', and considered to be the first microbiologist. He is best known for hs work on the improvement of the microscope and was the first to observe and describe single-celled organisms. Sir John Leslie (1766-1832) the Scottish mathematician and physicist best remembered for his research into heat. He gave the first modern account of capillary action in 1802 and froze water using an air-pump in 1810, the first artificial production of ice. He invented the Leslie Cube in 1804 which was a device used in the measurement of demonstration of the variations in energy radiating from different surfaces.

A portrait of botanist George Lloyd of Brynestyn (1815-43) author of 'Travels in the Himalaya Mountains', shown reclining in arab dress. He accompanied his friend the artist Prisse d'Avennes on his travels through Egypt, dying at Thebes when his rifle accidentaly discharged. While dying he managed to write a letter to his father explaining his death. Very fine 1st state with wonderful fresh colour. Published in the 'Oriental Album: Characters, Costumes, and Modes of Life, in the Valley of the Nile' by Achille-Constant-Theodore Emile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-79), a French orientalism who embraced Islam and took the name Edris-Effendi. The book was dedicated to Lloyd.

Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1857) was a geologist. From 1823-1826 he was secretary of the Geological Society and later served as president. His highly influential Principles of Geology (1830-33) was an important source for Darwin's theories and went to many editions. He urged Darwin to publish 'Origin of Species', 1859, with Sir Joseph Hooker. He is considered the greatest geologist of his generation.

Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) the French mathematician, philosopher and man of letters. He became Director of the Academie des Sciences, and the first President of the Prussian Academy of Science, at the invitation of Frederick the Great. He made an expedition to Lapland to determine the shape of the Earth. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

Portrait in oval of Nathaniel Nye (baptised 1624, Birmingham - after 1647), English mathematician, astronomer, cartographer and gunner. Nye developed an interest in guns (Birmingham's principal trade during the English Civil War) and he is recorded as testing a Birmingham cannon in 1643 and experimenting with a saker cannon in the Deritend area in 1645. From 1645 he was the master gunner to the Parliamentarian garrison at Evesham and in 1646 he successfully directed the artillery at the Siege of Worcester, detailing his experiences and in his 1647 book The Art of Gunnery. Inscribed 'Aetatis suae 20 Ao. 1644' in image; ink-ruled rectangular outer border. A copy of the etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 - 1677), by George Perfect Harding (1781 - 1853), portrait painter, copyist and antiquary.

Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892), naturalist, comparative anatomist and palaeontologist. His right hand rests on a dinosaur skull. From the mid 1830s the leading British comparative anatomist; one of the most formidable opponents of evolutionary theories, which he disputed with Huxley. He was superintendent of the Natural History Department of the British Museum, and designed new natural history galleries at South Kensington. After Irish painter Henry Jones Thaddeus (1860-1929). A fellow of the Royal Geographical society, he often painted portraits on commission, including two for Pope Pius X. He wrote an autobiography, 'Recollections of a Court Painter', during his retirement in California (although he died on the Isle of Wight).
