Satirical portrait of James Harris (1746-1820), 1st Earl of Malmesbury, sitting with both thumbs in his mouth. A career diplomat, he served in Madrid, Berlin, St Petersburg and the Hague and was sent to Brunswick to solicit the hand of Princess Caroline for the Prince of Wales. This satire relates to one of his less successful missions: in 1796 he was sent to negotiate peace with the French Directory. A conversation was quoted in the London Chronicle in which Malmesbury told Delacroix, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, that he would have to contact London to ask if he was authorized to conclude a treaty for the allies of Great Britain.

Satire on the imminent 'birth' of the Catholic Emancipation Bill, published just days before the Bill was introduced/delivered. At the centre of the image are Wellington (holding 'Ministerial Forceps'), Peel (with a bottle of medicine), and an old woman, as doctor-accoucheur, apothecary, and nurse. The nurse sits with a copy of The Times, which had urged concessions to the Catholics and was styled 'the hireling of Popery' by opponents of the Bill. Three winds of 'Faction' blow from above, issuing from the heads of Eldon (chief opponent of Emancipation), Winchelsea (included in reference to his extravagant speches) and a third. Figures around the edges include two frenzied bishops, two non-Anglican ministers (of which one is evidently Irving), O'Connell in wig and gown stood addressing a band of his followers, and Cumberland top right, in hussar uniform.

An allegorical monument to famed mathematician, astronomer, theologian and physicist Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726), with a decorative border showing scientific aparatus. From Eugene Mac-Swiny's 'Tombeaux des Princes, Grand Capitaines et Autres Hommes Illustres, Qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne'. Owen McSwiny, former manager of Drury Lane and the Haymarket Theatres, had travelled to Italy where he bought works of Italian painters, including Canaletto, to sell to English collectors. He also planned a series of historical pictures to decorate the Duke of Richmond's apartment at Goodwood, commemorating the deeds of famous Englishmen.

Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879) was a French Egyptologist and archeologist who moved to Egypt in 1827 and adopted the Egyptian way of life, converting to Islam and being known as Idriss-effendi. Very fine 1st state with wonderful fresh colour.

Children clamber over a maritime John Bull. Elihu Burritt (1810-79), an American diplomat, suggested Britain should extend the new Penny Post and slash the cost of sending letters abroad from a shilling to threepence to promote trade and brotherhood. This satire ridicules the idea.

Justice Mittimus intrudes between a couple, inviting himself to live with with them ''to see that every thing goes on pretty and smooth in the family''. A satire of the Seditious Meetings Act of 1795 which, although designed to curtail political meetings, was being used against other groups, including prayer meetings.
