Queen Victoria and family disembarking at Aberdeen, probably for their first visit to the city in September 1848. A huge crowd awaits the royal arrival. Queen Victoria's visit followed soon after she purchased the nearby castle of Balmoral, sight unseen. After Victoria had it rebuilt between 1853 and 1855. It has continued to be a popular residence with the monarchy ever since.

John Abernethy (1764 - 1831), surgeon and teacher. In the late 1780s he began to lecture on anatomy at his house in Bartholomew Close, and speedily attracted a large class, the numbers of which were swollen when Dr. Marshall, the most popular anatomical teacher in the city, ceased to lecture. Abernethy's success was one of the causes which induced the governors of St. Bartholomew's to build a lecture theatre, where in 1791 he began to lecture on anatomy, physiology, and surgery, and thus became the founder of the medical school attached to that ancient hospital. About this time he was himself a diligent attendant at the lectures of John Hunter, with whom he had also private conferences on scientific matters, and whose influence greatly determined the bent of his mind. In 1796 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1814 he was appointed to lecture on anatomy and physiology at the College of Surgeons (there was no regular professorship), and held the office till 1817. His lectures were mainly devoted to explaining the Hunterian museum, then lodged in the college, and to expounding the views of John Hunter, of whose theory of life Abernethy constituted himself an ardent champion. A view of Abingdon Old Gaol, probably published before the prison opened in 1812. Taken from the banks of the Thames (with an angler), it also shows Abingdon Bridge. On the opposite side is a wharf, with a barge, scale beam and crane. The gaol was built by Daniel Harris (c. 1761-1840), the Surveyor and Gaoler of Oxford Prison, and Sir Jeffry Wyatville RA (1766-1840), architect who worked on alterations for both Chatsworth House and Windsor Castle. It was largely superseded by the larger prison at Reading (1844) and closed in 1868. After being used as a grain store, slum dwellings and a leisure centre, it has now been converted into flats.

She holds up a comic mask in her left hand, behind to left, a tree, pipes tied to a branch; in oval. Mrs Abington was rumoured to have spent her teenage years working as a prostitute. Frances Abington (1737-1815), actress. Born in lowly circumstances, Abington grew up in the slums around Drury Lane, and sold flowers and sang in Covent Garden as a girl. Along with other jobs she did when young (kitchenmaid, milliner's assistant), various accounts of her life hint at prostitution during her early years. After making a start as an actress in London her first professional success came while working in Dublin, rejoining Garrick's Drury Lane company where she established herself as one of the leading comedy actresses of her generation. She was also the mistress of at least two prominent figures. Engraving after the several portrait 'Mrs Abington as the Comic Muse' by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1764-8, hair and dress repainted 1772-3) now in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This was one of several portraits that Reynolds painted of Abington- he was an admirer and purchased twelve tickets for her benefit performance in 1772. Reynolds' portrait was a companion to his portrait of Sarah Siddons as 'the Tragic Muse'.

Abu Simbel, one of Egypt's top tourist attractions, built by Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. This view is of the main hypostyle hall, showing the eight statues of Ramesses dressed as Osiris, half-buried in sand. In 1968 the whole complex was moved to an artificial hill to raise it above the water of the artifical lake created by the Aswan Dam. Published in the monumental folio edition of 'Egypt & Nubia: from drawings made on the spot' by David Roberts (1796 - 1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe. This example comes from the library of Sir Richard Hungerford Pollen (1815-81), 3rd Baronet of Redenham, an amateur artist listed as a subscriber to this work. However this is not a hand-coloured subscription plate but is still an early printing, one issued in wrappered parts prior to the bound First Edition.

An amateur watercolour by Maria Read after a chromolithograph by Samuel Thomas Gill (1818-1880) titled 'Native Sepulchre' from his series of twenty four studies of Australian life titled 'The Australian Sketchbook' 1865. The image illustrates the aboriginal burial practice of lying the deceased on an elevated platform draped in leaves, benath the platform several wild dogs gather.

Aborigines of King George Sound, Western Australia, gathered round a barbeque roasting lizard. A study was carried out involving overnight stays of Aborigines on board the Astrolabe as well as reciprocal visits ashore by members of the French contingent. This particular lithograph helps to document the time d'Urville's expedition spent at King George Sound, Western Australia between 7 and 25 October, 1826. Pl. no. 24 of: "Voyage de la corvette l'Astrolabe. Atlas historique"; the account of Jules Dumont D'Urville's important expedition to the South Seas between 1826 and 1829.

The second Battle of Aboukir Bay, in which a British army of 5,000 led by General Ralph Abercromby landed along the beach to dislodge an entrenched French detachment of 2,000 under General Louis Friant. A pastoral landscape with four figures; in the right hand of the foreground Abraham and Isaac walk up the path carrying kindling. Beyond, in the centre, are two seated figures with a donkey. After 'Landscape with Abraham and Isaac' (1665) by Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675), a student of Poussin. Dughet's successful career as a landscape artist saw him become one of the best known painters in Rome, alonside Poussin and Claude Lorrain.
