A jacanas chick on a lily pad. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) and his twin Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were twins and child protegés who worked very closely together until C.M. Detmold committed suicide in 1908. Traumatised, Edward produced only one etching in the next fifteen years, returning to the art only in 1923.

Woman in robe at window, holding curtain back with her right hand. Arthur Ralph Middleton Todd (1891-1966) was a painter, draughtsman, etcher and teacher. Son of the landscape and genre painter, Ralph Todd (1856-1932). He studied at the Slade school of Fine Art after serving in the army during WWI. He was the meember of several societies including: Society of Etchers and Engravers, 1930; the Watercolour Society, 1937; Royal Society of Portrait Painters, 1938 and member of the English Art Club in 1945. He taught at Leicester School of Art where he was head of drawing and painting, 1934-39; then returning to London was appointed as master of the life class at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art. From 1946-49 he taught at the Royal Academy Schools and 1947-56 at the City and Guild School, Kennington.

A rather bleak and oppressive scene of a vast industrial conurbation, with figures and multiple placards and hoardings advertising products and events in the foreground. Smoke belches from factory chimneys and five pottery kilns.
The Latin American artist Joaquin Macias is known to have lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Nicaragua, and to have visited Chile in 1951. In a hand written note discovered with a group of his etchings, he mentions a period of "30 years residence" in Britain.
He seems to have etched most of his plates in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Marine scene: rowing boats, sailing ships, and a paddle steamer (upper right) in front of some distant buildings. Frank Henry Mason (1876 - 1965) was a cadet on HMS Conway. Having served in the Royal Navy in the First World War, Mason became a war artist, with several such images held at the Imperial War Museum. Between the wars he became a full-time artist, working as an illustrator, a poster artist for railway companies, and supplying posters and postcards for shipping companies. From 1900 onwards he exhibited at the RA, and was awarded R.I. in 1929. Mason illustrated the book North Sea Fishers and Fighters in 1911, and was a 'significant artist of marine and coastal scenes, as well as an illustrator of shipping books'.

Colonel Francis Augustus Fane (1824-1893) was a Colonel who fought in the Indian Mutiny. He was commander of the Peshawar Light Horse. He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 25th Regiment. His life was full of excitement starting first as a soldier, then a banker before settling down as a country gentleman. He started life as a soldier in Antigua where he did some extensive sightseeing before returning to England for his second assignment which took him to Quebec, leading to further sightseeing with his uncle Major -General Mildmay Fane, around Niagara, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston. In 1854 he returned to England to immediately join his uncle in India. It was until 1860 when he next moved to join the 25th regiment in Gibraltar. Following the death of his father in 1862 and the later death of his brother-in-law Anthony Willson, the Sleaford banker in 1866, he returned in November to end his army career, and embarked on a career in banking and finance.

During his time as a soldier he managed to find a lot of free time to indulge in numerous pastimes. This enabled him to become adept at music, and at drawing, painting and engraving. Whilst in the West Indies he had a large organ, which he took with him and exchanged in Calcutta in 1857 for a large harmonium, which was lost during the Mutiny. This ability enabled him to play in church in Quebec and in 1860 he received a new piano from Berlin in Gibraltar. It wasn’t until 1851 that he began etching, at which point he was in London based at a printers to learn that art of printing and engraving. He then bought his own printing press, which he took to India.

After leaving finance he soon became involved in local affairs in Fulbeck and in farming. He became a Justice of the Peace in 1875; and was very active in the affairs of the Conservative Association and of the Agricultural Society. His diaries came to abrupt end in 1884, nine years before his death, so little can be said about his remaining years.

Etched title page in a mediaeval style with a strong art nouveau influence, showing a man leaning over a work desk. Harold Edward Hughes Nelson (1871-1948), artist, etcher and engraver, who designed bookplates, adverts and postage stamps. Influenced by Albrecht Durer and William Morris, he specialised in black and white images. In advertising his clients included Cadbury’s, Pears Soap, Dewar's and Selfridges This is probably the title to 'Harold Nelson: his book of book-plates consisting of 24 original designs'. The date 1895 in the title is within the halberd monogram.

The postman is mobbed at the door by children looking for valentine cards. By George Bernard O'Neill (1828-1917), published in 'Etchings for the Art Union of London by the Etching Club', plate 5. Sentimental paintings of children were extremely popular with Victorian audiences. Critics often dismissed such pictures as intellectually undemanding, yet some of the most important artists of the day took up the subject. The emotion of these pictures centre on a new, 19th century conception of childhood as an innocent, separate state to be shielded and prolonged.

Joseph Pennell [1857 - 1926], painter, illustrator and etcher, was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Philadelphia Quaker parents, and briefly attended the School of Industrial Design now called the Philadelphia College of Art. He was a pupil in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts between 1878-80, and his unusual ability in etching was early recognized by his instructor, James L. Claghorn.

A street scene, Nottingham; captioned to verso in pencil. Henry Kirke White (1785 - 1806), was a poet; the house in which he is said to have been born is in Exchange Alley. In c.1900 the lower portion was a butcher's shop, the upper portion is a tavern with the sign of ‘The Kirke White.’ Initially a clerk in a legal practice, White decided to pursue a career in the church. To raise funds for this move he published a small volume of poems in 1803, which was not successful. In 1805, he began studying at Cambridge where he became a highly regarded scholar. However, the punishing regime he set himself made him ill and he died of consumption at the age of twenty-one. After his death a large quantity of verse and prose was found among his papers, which was published as The Remains of Henry Kirke White with an Account of his Life (1807). This volume, which went to ten editions, formed the basis of White's reputation as a promising poet who had died tragically young. Harold Frank Collinson (1886 - 1955). Collinson was the etching master at Nottingham Municipal School of Art. He left Nottingham in 1940 to live in the United States and died in New York in 1955.

Two figures and laden camels with coconut palms beyond, by Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), twin brother to Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908). The pair were among the artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrators, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment. Edward expressed artistic versatility and published a number of books of fine fantasy drawings in the 1920s; they portrayed a vivid imagination and he utilised warm colouring, which suited the period. The Jungle Book (1908) was to be the last substantial commission that the brothers worked on - due to the death of Charles in that same year. An ancient bridge over a river, possibly in Mechelen, Belgium. Nieuwenkamp's 'Brücke in Mecheln' has a similar window structure. Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950) was the first European artist to visit Bali. It is probable that this view was drawn from his houseboat, 'De Zwerver' (The Wanderer), in which he toured Europe, holding exhibitions on board.

Malcolm Osborne [1880 - 1963] was born in Frome, Somerset. He studied at Bristol School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, under Sir Frank Short. When Short retired in 1924 he succeeded him as head of the etching and engraving school. Osborne produced just over a hundred prints, including British and European land and townscapes, but it is for his portraiture that he is most highly regarded.
