John Locke Esqr.
W. Smart sculp.
Published by G. Kearsly, No.46 Fleet Street. [n.d., c.1780.]
Copper engraving, 210 x 160mm. 8¼ x 6¼".
John Locke (1632 – 1704), influential philosopher and social contract theorist; oval portrait on a pedestal. Locke developed an alternative to the Hobbesian state of nature and argued a government could only be legitimate if it received the consent of the governed and protected the natural rights of life, liberty, and estate. If such consent was not given, argued Locke, citizens had a right of rebellion. Locke is one of the few major philosophers who became a minister of the government. Locke's ideas had an enormous influence on the development of political philosophy, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers and contributors to liberal theory. His writings, along with those of the writings of many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, influenced the American revolutionaries as reflected in the American Declaration of Independence. After Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646 - 1723), for 'Sketches from nature, in high preservation, by the most honourable masters. Containing upwards of one hundred and ten portraits, or characters, of the most conspicuous persons in the Kingdom'.

Monument Erected to the Memory of Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey.
Byley del. Fittler sculp.
Published by R. Bowyer, Historic Gallery, Pall Mall _ May 20, 1794.
Engraving, sheet 460 x 290mm (18 x 11½"). Trimmed to plate.
Obelisk shaped monument with relief sculpture, Newton reclining on top of a casket or sarcophagus decorated with frieze; he gestures towards a scroll held by two cherubs to right, a female figure relining on a globe above at top. Sir Isaac Newton FRS (1643 - 1727) was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian who is perceived and considered by a substantial number of scholars and the general public as one of the most influential men in history. His 1687 publication of the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica is considered to be among the most influential books in the history of science, laying the groundwork for most of classical mechanics. In this work, Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws by demonstrating the consistency between Kepler's laws of planetary motion and his theory of gravitation, thus removing the last doubts about heliocentrism and advancing the scientific revolution. In mechanics, Newton enunciated the conservation principles of momentum and angular momentum. In optics, he built the first practical reflecting telescope and developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the many colours that form the visible spectrum. He also formulated an empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound. In mathematics, Newton shares the credit with Gottfried Leibniz for the development of the differential and integral calculus. He also demonstrated the generalised binomial theorem, developed the so-called "Newton's method" for approximating the zeroes of a function, and contributed to the study of power series. From Bowyer's edition of David Hume's 'History of England'. W: 2140. in the NPG. Ex Collection Norman Blackburn.

Samuel Pepys [1633 - 1703], an important naval administrator, is famous for the diaries that he wrote in shorthand between 1660 and 1669. His skill lay in his close observation and total recall of the details of his private life and thoughts on social and political life in London. A passionate man, his great loves were his library, the theatre and 'music and women'. His professional preoccupations were with economics and politics but he retired following the Revolution of 1688 after refusing to swear an oath of allegiance to William and Mary. Nevertheless, he remained a key figure in social, intellectual and naval circles.

Alexander Pope, the 18th century English poet, was best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. The son of a linen-draper, Pope was first noticed by Jacob Tonson who published his 'Pastorals' in 1709. With 'The Rape of the Lock' (1712), and his translations of Homer, Pope became the most formidable literary figure of his day, with a large circle of both friends and enemies. Primarily a satirical poet and of unsurpassed metrical skill, he wrote 'what oft was thought, but ne'er so well expressed'. A friend of Swift and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, part of Lord Burlington's circle, and famous in the history of landscape gardening for the grounds of his villa at Twickenham (particularly his 'grotto'), he was revered as one of the great personalities of the age.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) was an English organist and Baroque composer of secular and sacred music. Little is acutally known about Purcell, even the pronunciation of his name is disputed by musicians and historians alike. As a chorister at the Chapel Royal, he sung at the coronation of King Charles II; until his voice broke when he became assistant to the organ-builider John Hingson, who was keeper of wind instruments to the King. From Westminster School and his assistantship at the abbey he went on in 1679 to take Blow's position as organist, which Blow resigned in favour of his pupil, Purcell. From the Collection of J.S.
