Self-portrait of Feodor Iwanowitsch (c.1765-1832), the Russian painter and copperplate engraver. Captured from a nomadic tribe of Kalmyks in Mongolia as a child, he was given by Catherine II to Princess Amelia of Baden, who, recognising his talents, gave him an education in the arts. He travelled to Greece with Lord Elgin, sketching the antiquities, then travelled to London where he oversaw the engraving of his sketches. He returned to Baden where he became Court Painter.

He was created Prince of Smolensk in 1812.

Nicholas I (1796-1855), Emperor of Russia from 1825 until his death. Although he led the Imperial Russian Army in the unsuccessful Crimean War, Nicholas helped to create an independent Greek state and seized several territories in the Caucasus, defeating the Ottoman and Persian Empires in the wars of the 1820s. Under his rule, the Russian Empire reached its greatest extent of over 20 million square kilometres. From a series of portraits by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860).

Peter the Great.
Peter the Great. The life of this singular sovereign has more the air of ancient romance than of authentick history. He was the son of the Czar Alexis Michaelowits, by his second wife, and born of the 30th of May 1672...He died January 28, 1725; at the age of fifty-three. The Czar wrote several productions on the subject of naval affairs; and his name must therefore be added to the short catalogue of Royal Authors.

A Russian woman feeding pigs, sheep and a cow in farmyard, published in Atkinson's 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs, and Amusements of the Russians'. According to the text a Russian farmyard is 'little more than a receptacle and shelter for stock... The Dairy is as yet imperfectly known to them'. Atkinson accompanied his uncle, James Walker. to St Petersburg when Walker was appointed engraver to Catherine the Great. On his return he and his uncle published this work, which contained 100 plates.
Abbey: Travel 223, 'These plates of Atkinson's show the spontaineity and sprit possible when the artist is his own engraver... The colouring is skilfully done'.

Russian fisherman and women standing on a row boat on the Neva, published in Atkinson's 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs, and Amusements of the Russians'. According to the text these vessels 'serve the fishmongers at once for dwelling houses, shops and fishponds... the lower part of the bark is divided into different wells for the keeping [of] all kinds of fresh-water fish... Naturalists mention upwards of twenty sorts of salmon caught on the Neva [as well as] fresh and salted cavia'. Atkinson accompanied his uncle, James Walker. to St Petersburg when Walker was appointed engraver to Catherine the Great. On his return he and his uncle published this work, which contained 100 plates.
