The explosive 'hellburners' or fireships used to destroy the pontoon bridge constructed by the army of Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, during the seige of Antwerp. Supported and subsidised by Elizabeth I, Italian engineer Federigo Giambelli developed perhaps the earliest example of weapons of mass destruction, two unmanned ships packed with gunpowder, schrapnel and fitted with a sophisticated timer mechanism set to detonate at the ideal moment. It is recorded that over one thousand Spanish troops were killed instantly at the moment of detonation, and the seige on Antwerp was lifted for a time.

The Barge of the Adventure saving the Crew of a Bombard [ms].
The Barge of the Adventure saving the Crew of a Bombard [ms].
M.A.J. Whitby. Newlands 1828.
Rare lithograph, printed area and text 130 x 170mm (5 x 6¾").
This print probably shows the crew of the HMS Adventure coming to the aid of shipwrecked sailors, perhaps off the coast of North Africa. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) appears to have spent time in Italy and North Africa in the 1820s or before, and the Adventure was in Leptis Magna, near Tripoli in modern-day Libya, in 1817. Whitby was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

[The Spanish Armada Tapestries - The English sending in the fireships at Calais.] IX.
C. Lempriere delin. J. Pine Sculp.
Publish'd by John Pine, June 24 1739. according to Act of Parliament. T. Bowles, in St Paul's Church Yard, & J. Bowles & Son at the Black Horse in Cornhill. [1753.]
Engraving printed from two plates, the scene printed in blue, the frame in black. Outer plate mark 380 x 610 (15 x 24").
A scene depicting the English fleet sending in the eight fireships among the Spanish Armada, anchored off Calais in 1588. Petrified that these would explode in their midst, most of the Spanish cut their anchor cables to escape quickly, leaving themselves at the mercy of heavy winds that drove them north. The scene is bordered by an engraved frame decorated with trophies and medallion portraits of the English Lord Admiral (Lord Howard of Effingham) and his captains, including Martin Frobisher. In 1591 Charles Howard commissioned ten tapestries celebrating the victory over the Armada from the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom, which were hung in the House of Lords at Westminster. Over a century later John Pine, fearing that 'Time, or Accident, or moths may deface these valuable shadows', commissioned Charles Lempriere and Hubert-François Gravelot to make copies, published as 'The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords'. Pine's fears were well founded: the tapestries were lost when Parliament was destroyed by fire in 1834. This example is from the second and final edition.

Fine aquatint and engraving with large margins. Platemark: 480 x 640mm (18¾ x 25¼").
A dramatic battle scene depicting action between the English frigate 'Unicorn', and the French frigate 'La Tribune', which took place June 8th, 1796 near Waterford. Launched in 1793, 'Tribune' was under the command of Commodore John Moulson (or Moulston), an American who had served in the French Navy for 16 years. On 8th June 1796, 'Tribune' was sailing off the south coast of Ireland, when at daybreak the British frigates 'Unicorn' and 'Santa Margarita' sighted the French vessels and proceeded to chase them. 'Unicorn' eventually pulled alongside and an intense engagement that lasted for 35 minutes ensued, resulting in the capture of 'Tribune'. The victory earned Sir Thomas William, to whom this print is dedicated, a knighthood. In 1847 the Admiralty awarded the remaining survivors of this action the 'Naval General Service Medal'. Details of both ships are below titles with an account of the event from Sir Thomas William to Admiral Kingsmill, from on board the 'Unicorn' dated 1796.

La Grande Guerre. Victoire Navale des Iles Falkland. Quatrte Croiseurs Allemands Attaqués et Coulés par l'Escadre Anglaise. No.34.

Etching. 280 x 427mm. 11 x 16¾".
In 1914 the British were defeated at the Battle of Coronel by the Imperial German Navy. The British then sent large force to track down and destroy the victorious German squadron. Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee led the SMS Scharnhorst, SMS Gneisenau, SMS Numberg, Dresden and Leipzig to attempt a raid on the British supply base at Stanley. A large heavily armoured squadron had arrived at the port the day before and detected the German squadron early on. The German fleet, except the Dresden and the auxiliary Seyditz, were hunted down and sunk.
