Entrance Front of Selwood Park in the County of Berks, the Seat of James Sibbald Esqr. [French translation below.]
Robt. Mitchell Archt.
[London] Publish'd Jany, 1, 1801.
Etching and aquatint in sepia, 295 x 485mm. 11½ x 19". A few faint spots of foxing. Full margins.
View of the façade of a residence in the Palladian style, with two figures walking on a path at right leading towards the columned portico. Numbered 'Plate 1' upper left. From architect Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Silwood Park, near Staines, Berkshire. In about 1788, Sir James Sibbald built a Georgian mansion on part of the present house and demolished the old "Eastmore"; he called it Selwood or Silwood Park. The name stems from the Old English for Sallow, which presumably grew then along the banks of the streams that flow through the Park. The house was, in its turn, demolished, and the present mansion was completed in 1878. During WWII it became a convalescent home for airmen; then in 1947 Imperial College purchased the house for entomological research and field studies.

Plan of the Intended Coast Road from near St. Austell to Torpoint through Fowey and Looe showing the present circuitous and hilly Road through Liskeard and Lostwithiel Surveyed under the directions of Ja.s M. Rendel Civil Engineer 1834
Hackett, lithog.d, 15, Paris Street, Exeter
Scarce lithographic map with hand-colouring, backed onto linen, printed area approx. 715 x 2150mm (28¼ x 84¾")
Very large map showing the area between Plymouth and St. Austell in Cornwall on the south coast of England, and north as far as Liskeard. The map shows the proposed coastal road between St. Austell and Torpoint (across the river Tamar from Plymouth) and was surveyed under the direction of the renowned civil engineer James Meadow Rendel (1799-1856). Rendel was born near Okehampton in Devon and, after working for Thomas Telford, set up his own practice in Plymouth in 1822. Rendel's bridge across an estuary of the Plym within Plymouth harbour (completed 1827) established him as a leader of contemporary bridge design, and in the 1830s Rendel's reputation was such that he was involved in the improvement and development of practically every river and harbour in south-west England. In 1838 he moved to London and thereafter took on projects in the north of England and Scotland and, in the 1850s, countries including South Africa, India and Brazil.
For a portrait of Rendel see ref. 22531.

Stanfield Hall, The Seat of the late Mr. Jermy. Who was Assassinated November 28th. 1848. [On verso in ink:] Charles William Bing 1849 - Stanfield Hall_
J.T. Wood. Holywell Sc.
[n.d. c.1880.]
Engraving. 115 x 146mm. 4½ x 5¾".
Stanfield Hall, Norfolk was the home of Isaac Jermy, Esq, who on the night of November 28th, 1848, stepped outside to smoke, unaware of a strange figure hiding in the bushes. The air was then filled with two shots, whereby he fell to the ground, mortally wounded. The others rushed out of the dining room, and with three more shots, Isaac's son, wife, and a servant fell to the ground. One of the other servants later recognised the murderer as James Blomfield Rush, the family's bailiff. Rush had reneged on previous loans and agreements with Isaac and now his major debt was due for repayment on 30 November, two days after the murders took place. Blomfield was hung for his crime on 21 April 1849.
