Dogs of the Dalmatian breed. -
Dogs of the Dalmatian breed. - from an original picture in the possession of Sir John Fleming Leicester Baronet &c. &c.
James Ward R.A. Pinx et Delt.
London Pubd. May 1st. 1824. R. Ackermann Strand.
Lithograph on india laid paper, image 370 x 510mm (14½ x 20"). Some foxing. Tatty extremities outside india.
While there is no reference by Julia Frankau to this very unusual and rare lithograph of the Dalmatian dog, an exhibition list does mention a drawing with the same title exhibited at the British Institute in 1806. A prolific artist, James Ward R..A. (1769 - 1859) was one of the finest animal, portrait, and landscape painters of Regency England. Brittle, pious, and argumentative, Ward worked well into the mid-19th century, creating dynamic compositions that epitomized Romanticism. He was devoted to the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, and emulated them more than any of his contemporaries.

Champion Dandies
Champion Dandies "Blacket House Yet" and "Ancrum Fanny".
Arthur Wardle 1897 [signed and dated in plate.]
Published by Art Engraving Department, Spratts Patent Limited, London E.C.3. 1924.
Photogravure on india laid paper, 445 x 525mm. 17½ x 20¾". A good impression with full margins. Slight Printer's crease on left.
Two Dandie Dinmont terriers. The breed is named after Dandie Dinmont, a jovial farmer in Sir Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering. Arthur Wardle (British, 1864 -1949) was a prolific and very talented late nineteenth century artist who created an extraordinary body of work, yet surprisingly little has been written about him. Known by some as a painter of big game and wildlife, he is for dog lovers one of the pre-eminent painters of pure bred dogs that England has produced.

[British, n.d., c.1680.]
Etching, 140 x 210mm. 5½ x 8¼".
A greyhound and spaniel looking up at two squirrels in a tree upper right; two cats lower right, a mastiff chained to a thatched building at left, and a forth dog sitting at centre of composition. From a series of plates showing groups of animals, numbered '10' lower right. The composition derives from Francis Barlow's drawing of three dogs and two cats, which was etched in reverse by Gaywood for 'Variae quadrupedum species'. Gaywood modified this design, including another dog at bottom centre and another cat at lower right, and has removed one of the original cats and added the tree with squirrels in the background. This appears to be a reissue of his plate, with the number and a 'Y' added (upper right).
