A pair of skeletons looking at an hour glass one holds it up. The plate was etched by Samuel Ireland after John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79), a painter of fantastical subjects. Ireland (1744-1800) is best known for his topographical books, including ''A Picturesque Tour through Holland, Brabant, and part of France'' (1790), '' Picturesque Views on the River Thames'' (1792) & ''Picturesque Views on the River Medway'' (1793).

A scene in a dentist's surgery showing a small, squat dentist, standing on a stool and pulling out the tooth of a woman who is in pain. The woman, kicking out her leg in agony knocks over a basin causing a little dog to bark. Bloody teeth dangle from strings in the window and the bookcase behind them contains books such as 'Frankenstein', 'Tales of the Devil', 'Treatise on Tooth Powder & Brushes' and 'Miseries of Human Life'.

Ralph Clodpole'. A packet of papers wrapped in red tape and lettered 'Began in 1699 not yet finished In Chancery' lies on the ground.

Three-quarter length standing portrait of Thomas Drummond (1797-1840) facing the front, leaning with his left fist on papers on a table to right, with two books behind it, left hand on his hip, looking ahead and to right, wearing a dark tail-coat suit, velvet waistcoat, jacket collar and bow-tie and wing collar. He was was a Scottish army officer, civil engineer and senior public official. He used the Drummond light which was employed in the trigonometrical survey of Great Britain and Ireland. He is sometimes mistakenly given credit for the invention of limelight, at the expense of Sir Goldsworthy Gurney (1793 –1875). It was Drummond, however, who realised its value in surveying.

A satire of the famous duel between William Pitt the Younger and George Tierney on Putney Heath on Sunday May 27th, 1798, fought when Pitt accused Tierney of a lack of patriotism in Parliament. Here Tierney points his pistol at Pitt, who stands with his pistol pointing at the ground. Fox has a restraining hand on Tierney's shoulder, but only attempting to persuade him to use a blunderbuss instead. Neither politician was hurt.

A study of a African Elephant in its natural habitat, with a herd of elephants in the background, from Captain William Cornwallis Harris's 'Portraits of Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa'. Harris (1807 - 1848), an English military engineer, artist and hunter, joined the East India Company in December 1823. In their employ he was able to pursue his taste for field sports and the depiction of wildlife. One of the more notable of the early Victorian travellers, Harris's illustrations of the large African fauna were the first to have any claim to accuracy. They were originally issued in parts 1840-2 and as a volume in 1843.

Scene in a forge with three horses, tethered to a wall-ring. A farrier hammers nails into the hoof of one of the horses, which attempts to bite another horse but it is fended off with a pair of tongs by a second farrier. After Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault (1791-1824). From the only edition of Rodwell and Martin's 'Various Subjects drawn from life on Stone', known as the 'English Series'. Despite its commercial failure at the time, Gericault's 'English Series' is now considered to have been of the greatest importance in the development of lithography as an art form during the first half of the nineteenth century. Due to the comparitively small number of impressions printed before the stones were effaced, exampes of Gericault's lithographs from this series are now exteremelty rare and have always been amongst the most sought after of his original printed works.

A satire on the dinner to Charles James Fox (1749-1806) on 10th October 1800. The actual tenor of the speech is ignored, except for Fox's contention that he had always been faithful to the principles of 1688, and his rejoicing at the success of America. Fox's inconsistency was a favourite topic (chiefly in relation to the Coalition and the Regency), as was the allegation that his supporters in Westminster were the riff-raff of the district. Fox presides at a dinner of ragamuffins. He stands at the head of the table with a paper titled 'Resolution' before him. There are also pipes, papers of tobacco, measures of Gin, tankards of ale, and one guttering candle. The guests are ruffianly vagabonds and include a chimney sweep, a man with a bludgeon, a ragged butcher with a mastiff representing the band of butchers who supported Fox at elections, possibley a sewer-man who holds an axe and a candle-end alight on the peak of his cap, and a bearded Jew is on the extreme left indicating his (former) indebtedness to Jews. A ragged man (right) fills the pot of a ruffian with a bandaged eye from a tankard inscribed 'The Kings Head C.I.F.'

A satire on Charles James Fox's (1749-1806) exclusion from office, by his resignation on the appointment of Lord Shelburne to succeed Rockingham. Design in an oval. Fox with a very melancholy expression, standing with folded arms facing three quarter to left outside a closed and padlocked gate repeating Wolsey's soliloquy from Henry VIII, Act III, Scene 2. The gate fills an archway, its top being of iron spikes, the padlock is inscribed Fast. The stone arch over the gate is inscribed Treasury. On the stone wall of the Treasury building (left) are torn placards. One is a broadside, 'Last Dying Speech' headed by a print of a man hanging from a gibbet; another is headed "Gamester". His speech is inscribed below the title.

A view of a Frost Fair, held on the Thames before the demolition of the old London Bridge improved river flow and prevented it freezing over. The fair of 1814 began on 1st February and lasted four days. Stalls and amusement rides built on the ice can be seen, with St Paul's Cathedral in the background.

Engraved funeral ticket, filled in with old ink mss, in ink bottom left "Mr. Cox". In centre in ink "You are desired to attend the funeral of Mr In.o Cater from No 3 Watling Street to Stains in Middlesex on Monday the 5th May to set out at six o'clock in the morning precisely". 175 x 190mm (7 x 7½"), wax seal on right margin, large margins. Corners of margin snipped, slight soiling, laid on album paper.
A funeral ticket, engraved by Thomas Dent after a watchpaper engraved by William Woollett for Robert Sanderson. It depicts a large stone plinth inscribed at the base with a Biblical quotation, on which is Father Time kneeling on the edge of a tomb with a skeleton.

A flattering profile portrait of George III as a youngish man, wearing embroidered coat, frilled cravat, sash and badge of the garter, and powdered wig tied with a large bow at the nape. Jeremiah Meyer (1735-89), a German-born portrait painter, was commissioned to paint the King's miniature portrait to be set in an oval of diamonds in the pearl bracelet given to Princess Charlotte as an engagement present. He also drew George's profile for the new coinage which earned him a gold medal from the Society of Arts in 1761. He was appointed Miniature Painter to the Queen and Enamel Painter to the King in 1764. He was also a founder member of the Royal Academy.

Two farriers and horses, by Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault (1791-1824). From the only edition of Rodwell and Martin's 'Various Subjects drawn from life on Stone', known as the 'English Series'. Despite its commercial failure at the time, Gericault's 'English Series' is now considered to have been of the greatest importance in the development of lithography as an art form during the first half of the nineteenth century. Due to the comparitively small number of impressions printed before the stones were effaced, exampes of Gericault's lithographs from this series are now exteremelty rare and have always been amongst the most sought after of his original printed works.

Half-length seated portrait of Samuel Greg (1758 –1834) to the right, head turned to look to front; wearing a dark coat and waistcoat, with white neckerchief and frill. Greg was an Irish-born industrialist and entrepreneur of the early Industrial Revolution and a pioneer of the factory system. He built Quarry Bank Mill, which at his retirement was the largest textile mill in the UK. He and his wife Hannah Greg assumed welfare responsibilities for their employees, many of whom were children, building a model village alongside the factory. At the same time, Greg inherited and operated a slave plantation in the West Indies.
