Comp. Holland excu. Lon: 1619.
Engraving, 17th century watermark, scarce. Sheet 375 x 275mm (14¾ x 11¾"). Trimmed to plate, wear in corners with loss. Edges tatty, damaged.
The family tree of James VI and I, with portraits of his ancestors back to Henry VII, designed to show his claim to the English throne but also celebrating the uniting of the Houses of York and Lancaster. The arms of the two rival families fill the bottom corners. The plate was first published by Hans Woutnell in 1603. The engraver was Benjamin Wright (fl. 1596-1613), a Londoner who seems to have spent much of his career abroad. He usually engraved maps, for example for the Langenes 'Caert-Thrésor' and Antonio Magini's atlas of Italy (the country's first), but does not appear to be reliable: he is recorded as pawning the copper plate of the map of Genova he was working on.

Mezzotint. 285 x 195mm (11¼ x 7¾"). With the collection stamps of the Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden. One stamp in printed area.
Portrait of Josias van de Kapelle (1632-96), a minister in Noordwijk, Den Briel and Leiden. This print was originally in the Kupferstich-Kabinett of Dresden, one of the most important print collections in the world. Established c.1560 as the private collection of the Prince-electors of Saxony, it became an independent museum in 1720. Relocated during the Second World War (thus missing the bombing of Dresden), most of the collection was looted by Soviets; although the bulk was returned in the late 1950s, over 50,000 items are still missing. However this print had already left the collection, as one of the inkstamps reads 'Duplum veräussert' (double sold); there were two sales of duplicates, 1904 and 1920.

[Anthony Maddox.]
[Anthony Maddox.] To long, unjust to our own country's cause, / On foreigners we wasted our applause, / On home-bred merit seldom known to smile, / Nor praise the product of our Native Isle. / But now each artist from abroad must yield, / And Mahomet to Maddox quits the field, / Who's form'd alike t'astonish & to please, / And adds to matchless skill a gracefull ease, / The sweetly smiling fair in crowds appear, / And love that art, they used to view with fear.
T. King Pinx.t. R. Houston Fecit.
Printed for & Sold by John Smith Map & Printseller at Hogarth's Head, in Cheapside, & Rob.t Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street, London.
Mezzotint. 355 x 250mm (14 x 9¾"). Small margins.
A three-quarter length portrait of the entertainer Anthony Maddox, wearing a rich suit with an emboidered waistcoat, holding a straw. Maddox was a successful slack-wire acrobat: his signature trick was standing on the wire and passing the straw from his foot to his mouth, accounting for its inclusion here. He drowned in 1758 when 'The Dublin Trader' was wrecked off the Scottish coast en route to Dublin, along with his travelling companion, actor Theophilus Cibber, and Edward, fifth Earl of Drogheda..
