Ludwig Pfyffer (1524-1594), the Swiss military leader, spokesman for Roman Catholic interests in the cantons, chief magistrate of Lucerne, as elected in 1571, and probably one of the most important Swiss political figures of the latter half of the 16th century. He is remembered for safely leading the royal family of Charles IX from Meaux to Paris whilst under Huguenot attack in 1567. He also formed a Swiss alliance with Spain against the accession of Henry of Navarre to the French throne.

A view of the Pissevache waterfall, located between Martigny and St. Maurice in the Valais region of Switzerland. A group of well dressed men and woman can be seen in conversation in the foreground, with one pointing towards the falls, to the right. From the 16th century, the Pissevache waterfall has been mentioned in some of the earliest travel accounts and has inspired many artists and alpinists. From the surrounding valley, it is clearly visible and easily accessible. By Swiss landscape painter and printmaker, Samuel Jakob Weibel (1771 - 1846).

Here depicted at the Communs, that face Postdam Palace, and the westward opening court of honour; sitatued in the Sanssouci Royal Park. Designed by Carl von Gontard and Jean Laurent le Geay, the communs are styled the same as the palace using various forms of baroque architecture and decoration. The facade is ornately decorated with curved colonnades, statues, obelisks, and a curvaceous stairway, which acted as a state entrance.

Unusual view of Rabeneck castle in Switzerland. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859), whose father owned Heywood, Ballynakill in Queen's County. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

The Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Europe, located between the cantons of Zurich and Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. Engraved by Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin (1760-1820) after Johann Jakob Schalch (1723-89), little-known Swiss painter. Extensive text below describing the location and significance of the waterfall, and noting that Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, had visited and been impressed by the spectacle on a visit in 1777.

Villagers with butter making machine and cows, and city in background. Alpine scene by Gabriel Lory, the younger (1784-1846), Swiss painter, watercolourist and engraver. Lory's wife Louise de Meuron supervised the production and colouring of Lory's prints while the artist travelled abroad in search of commissions. In 1814, the year this print was made, Lory arrived in England via Guernsey. Ackermann published an English translation of Lory's popular 'Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par le Simplon' in 1820.

Josias Simmler (1530-1576) was a Swiss theologian and classicist, author of the first book relating solely to the Alps. In his treatise 'De Alpibus commentarius', he collected all that the classical authors had written on the Alps, adding a good deal of material collected from his friends and correspondents. It was the first work exclusively devoted to the Alps. Another fragment of his vast plan to make his native land better known, was the work entitled 'De Helvetiorum republica', which appeared in Zurich in 1576, just before his death. It was regarded as the chief authority on Swiss constitutional matters up to 1798.

An interir view of the refectory of the Great St Bernard Hospice, in which several figures eat and converse. There has been a hostel at the Great St Bernard Pass since the 9th century, built for the protection of travellers crossing the alps. It was at the hospice that the St Bernard dog breed was created, bred to help with mountain rescues in the treacherous terrain.

The scene depicts a wide river with a raft on it, and the Saint Maurice castle and bridge in the middle ground. Two herders with goats are in the foreground, taking a path on the right side, away from the town. After painter, etcher and watercolourist Gabriel Lory (1784-1846). Some foxing, waterstain from right edge. Evidence of three missing leaves; some blank towards rear. Some small dents and chips to binding.
Charming and very competent depictions by a Victorian amateur of alpine buildings and landscapes, some featuring figures; each captioned and dated by the artist in pencil. A unique and intimate record of a summer spent in St. Moritz, the exclusive resort town in the Engadine valley in Switzerland.
