From 'Sketches in Perthshire' by David Octavius Hill, 30 lithographs published in Perth in six parts. David Octavius Hill (1802-1870) was a Scottish painter and arts activist. He collaborated with the engineer and photographer Robert Adamson to pioneer many aspects of photography in Scotland. He studied and learnt lithography at the School of Design and went on to produce his album of views "Sketches of Scenery in Perthshire". He was dissatisfied with the 'Institution' and established a separate Scottish Academy in 1829, along with Henry Cockburn. Over time, Hill took a turn towards photography and his collaboration with Adamson grew whereby Adamson's studio, "Rock House", on Calton Hill in Edinburgh became the centre of their photographic experiments. They photographed local scenes and persons and were prominent in developing "action" photographs. Both Adamson and Hill died due to ill health at early ages.

The Town of St Andrews.
The Town of St Andrews.
Drawn on the Spot by I. Clark.
London, Published by Smith, Elder & Co. 65 Cornhill, 1824.
Aquatint, 510 x 665mm. 20 x 26¼". Slight mount burn.
The Royal Burgh of St Andrews, from the "Views in Scotland" series. The town is shown from the south-east, with the tower of Holy Trinity on the left, St Rule's Tower and the ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral, with the coast on the right. Although it cannot be proved it is believed that 'I. Clark" is the Scottish painter John Heaviside Clark, famed as 'Waterloo Clark' for his early sketches of the Battle. He was also skilled in aquatinting, and certainly none of this series has a named engraver. Uncoloured examples of this series are rare, suggesting this is an early impression, possibly a proof.
Abbey No: 489.

Tinted lithograph heightened in white, sheet 630 x 450mm. Tatty extremities.
Fingal's Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Staffa has impressed us since 1772 when Sir Joseph Banks, an eminent naturalist of the time, “discovered” Staffa - he described its marvels in The Scots Magazine, an important news publication in Scotland at that time. The geology of Staffa, particularly Fingal’s Cave with its cathedral like pillars, encouraged Sir Walter Scott, Queen Victoria, Boswell and Dr Johnson, to name a few, to visit and enthuse. Mendelssohn brought the attention of music lovers everywhere to Staffa when he completed his famous overture in 1831. From a collection of views, inscribed '24' upper right.
