The North West View of St. Pauls Cathedral London. [Title repeated in French, Italian, and German.]
Cum Gratia et Privilego Sac: Caes: Majestatis. Georg Balthasar Probst, excud. A.V [Augsburg, Germany, n.d., c.1740s].
Hand coloured engraving, 310 x 420mm. 12¼ x 16½".
Several figures in foreground. Vue D’Optique prints, known as the perspective views, were intended for use in an optical diagonal machine, and were highly popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Used with a special viewer called “optical machines,” “optiques,” or 'zograscopes', these prints were a form of entertainment. Published in Paris, Augsburg, London, etc., ca. 1750-1800, the prints were exhibited by travelling showmen in the streets throughout Europe and also were collected by those in the professional and upper classes who had the optical machines at home. Another attribute of these prints is their bright, often crude hand colouring, applied boldly so to show the tints when viewed through the lens. The prints usually have a series of colours-blue, pink and yellow are common-crossing in bands from side to side, with bright highlights often including red. These cheerful and colourful images, with their fascinating history and peculiar appearance, make for unusual and appealing eighteenth-century prints. Numbered 'Med: Folo. No: 47' lower left and '181' upper right; from a series engraved and published by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732 - 1801).

In the early 1870’s Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Interior View of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul.
Interior View of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. To the Right Reverend William van Mildert, D.D. Lord Bishop of Llandaff and Dean of St Pauls This Interior View of the Cathedral, is respectfully dedicated by his most obedient & Humble Servant Josiah Taylor.
Drawn & Engraved by John Coney.
Published by M. Taylor, 1 Wellington St. Strand. [n.d., c.1835.]
Etching. 685 x 540mm, 27 x 21½". Repaired tear in margin.
View of Christopher Wren's St Paul's Cathedral, with light flooding down from the dome. Coney (1786-1833) seems to have been influenced by the work of Piranesi and Rossini: this view has been framed by Corinthian-style columns and architrave, and the perspective has been skewed to show a better view of the painted ceilings of the dome. Originally published by Josiah Taylor (1761-1834), who specialised in architectural prints and books, this example was published by his nephew and successor Martin Taylor (1788-1867). Apparently Martin contested his uncle's will, asserting that the Josiah's stock belonged to the business not the estate. He lost, having been described by the judge as a vexatious litigant, the stock was sold off and Martin Taylor had to downsize his business, moving from Josiah's 'Architectural Library' in High Holborn to smaller premises off the Strand.
