Her head is turned to the left, and she wears a loose-flowing dress with her hair partially pinned up. A waterfall and trees are visible in the background to the right. Dives, a maid of honour to Princess Anne, became the fourth wife of Sir Robert Howard (1626-98) in 1693, aged 19 to his 63. She is known to have been a pupil of Henry Purcell. Howard was a playwright who was first to use the phrase 'We the People' in English.

Portrait of Anne Hurle, hanged for forgery in 1804, and Methuselah Spalding who had been convicted of sodomy at the previous Sessions held on the 30th of November 1803. On the morning of execution, Ann and Spalding were brought from their cells and pinioned in the Press Room. They were then taken out into the yard and loaded into a horse drawn cart covered in a black cloth which emerged from the prison at about 8.10 a.m. for the short ride to the gallows.

He was accused of hiring three assassins to kill Thomas Thynne in order to have an affair with Thynne's rich wife, Elizabeth Seymour. Thynne was shot in Pall Pall, and the three killers and Königsmarck were soon rounded up and put on trial. Königsmark was acquitted of the charge of being an accessory before the fact (jury corruption according to diarist John Evelyn), but was banished. He joined the army of his uncle Otto Wilhelm von Königsmarck in Greece, where he died of wounds during the Morean War.

Leader of the Tories in the Lords in the 1730s, after Walpole's fall he was the one Tory to take high office (as lord privy seal and a privy councillor, from 1742) in the new ministry, as delebrated here. However, he resigned in December 1743, soon after this print was published. He subsequently regained his position as lord privy seal and held it until his death. Gower's proximity to the whig administration provoked suspicion that he had deserted Tory principles (Dr Johnson included him in his dictionary definition for 'renegado' although the printer removed the reference).

Three-quarter length portrait of English nobleman, John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland (1696-1779) standing and turned slightly to the left. He is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Garter, with one hand resting on a plumed hat placed on a table to his left and the other on the hilt of his sword. He faces forward, looking directly at the viewer. Manners was styled Marquess of Granby from 1711, until he succeeded to the title in 1721, cutting short a brief career in the House of Commons, where he had represented Rutland as a Whig. Charles Jervas (c. 1675–1739) was an Irish portrait painter. After studying for a year in London under Godfrey Kneller, he made copies of the Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court Palace by 1695, the proceeds of which funded travels to France and Italy. He was in Paris by 1699 and lived in Rome from 1703 to 1708, producing copies of Old Masters and acting as an agent for collectors. Returning to London in 1709, he married a wealthy widow, built a substantial art collection, and became friends with writers including Richard Steele, Jonathan Swift, and Alexander Pope, the latter briefly taking painting lessons from him. Jervas also pursued literary interests, most notably a translation of Don Quixote. In 1723 he succeeded Kneller as Principal Painter to the King. He made several short visits to Ireland and travelled again to Italy in 1738, dying soon after his return to London in 1739.

Three-quarter length portrait of English nobleman, John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland (1696-1779) standing and turned slightly to the left. He is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Garter, with one hand resting on a plumed hat placed on a table to his left and the other on the hilt of his sword. He faces forward, looking directly at the viewer. Manners was styled Marquess of Granby from 1711, until he succeeded to the title in 1721, cutting short a brief career in the House of Commons, where he had represented Rutland as a Whig. Charles Jervas (c. 1675–1739) was an Irish portrait painter. After studying for a year in London under Godfrey Kneller, he made copies of the Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court Palace by 1695, the proceeds of which funded travels to France and Italy. He was in Paris by 1699 and lived in Rome from 1703 to 1708, producing copies of Old Masters and acting as an agent for collectors. Returning to London in 1709, he married a wealthy widow, built a substantial art collection, and became friends with writers including Richard Steele, Jonathan Swift, and Alexander Pope, the latter briefly taking painting lessons from him. Jervas also pursued literary interests, most notably a translation of Don Quixote. In 1723 he succeeded Kneller as Principal Painter to the King. He made several short visits to Ireland and travelled again to Italy in 1738, dying soon after his return to London in 1739.

A scene depicting the hanging of a pirate at the Execution Dock in Wapping. It has been suggested that the pirate is Captain James Lowry, hanged in 1762. The man on horseback to the left holds the silver oar-mace of the Court of Admiralty, under whose jurisdiction the crime of piracy was tried and those convicted usually hanged. In London this was traditionally at Execution Dock, Wapping, where the gallows stood between the high and low watermarks on the Thames foreshore and the body was left hanging until three tides had at least partially submerged it. The corpse was then either often sent for anatomical dissection (ostensibly for medical training purposes) or in the case of notorious pirates coated in tar to preserve it as long as possible and hung in an iron gibbet framework at a prominent point on the Thames as a warning to others, until it rotted away.

Known as "The Proud Duke," supported the Williamite cause during the Glorious Revolution. While initially a courtier to James II, he broke with him in 1687 by refusing to entertain the papal nuncio and later supported William of Orange. Despite his support for William, he was closer to Princess Anne and was not always in high favour with King William III. After Jan van der Vaart (1653-1727).

Portrait of Ann de Laval, Countess Stanhope (died 1811), shown full-length and seated, facing left in mourning dress with a heavy shawl covering her hair. She rests her head on her right hand and gazes upward. A table beside her displays a skull, bones, a candle, and books, while a curtain and columns form the background. Above, decorative elements resembling crows with spread wings appear over a corpse, reinforcing the memento mori symbolism. She was the daughter of Francis Blake Delaval (1727–71), and the third wife of the Hon. Sir William Stanhope (1702–72) whom she married in 1759. After his death she married Charles Morris (c. 1745 –1838) a famous song/poetry writer and punch-maker and bard of the Sublime Society of Beef Steaks.

Portrait of Ann de Laval, Countess Stanhope (died 1811), shown full-length and seated, facing left in mourning dress with a heavy shawl covering her hair. She rests her head on her right hand and gazes upward. A table beside her displays a skull, bones, a candle, and books, while a curtain and columns form the background. Above, decorative elements resembling crows with spread wings appear over a corpse, reinforcing the memento mori symbolism. She was the daughter of Francis Blake Delaval (1727–71), and the third wife of the Hon. Sir William Stanhope (1702–72) whom she married in 1759. After his death she married Charles Morris (c. 1745 –1838) a famous song/poetry writer and punch-maker and bard of the Sublime Society of Beef Steaks.

A half-length portrait in oval of James Stephen (1732–1779) who, while in King's Bench Prison, wrote that imprisoning individuals for debt was contrary to the Magna Carta. This portrait was painted by William Thompson (c.1730-1800), who was incarcerated alongside Stephen in King's Bench Prison, where Thompson's angry protests against his imprisonment gained him a certain notoriety.

Portrait of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Namur and diplomat Thomas Strickland (c.1682-1740), shown half-length within an oval frame. He is turned to the left while looking directly at the viewer, with long hair and a cross suspended around his neck. His unsuccessful attempts to promote reconciliation between English Catholics and the government led James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender, to annouce Strickland as an enemy of the Catholic faith. In responce Strickland called James a bigot. Vanderbank's oil is in Sizergh Castle, Cumbria, a National Trust property (Accession number 998463).
