The May Garland or Triumph without Victory. See the Godlike Youth advance, Sports prepare and lead the dance, Fetes prepare and laurels bring, Songs of triumph to him sing.
W.G.
Published by S Fores N.o 3 Piccadilly May 26 1784
Rare etching, sheet 225 x 320mm (8¾ x 12¾"). Trimmed within plate. Some surface dirt.
A satirical depiction of Fox’s (1749-1806) chairing after the Westminster election on 17 May shows a chaotic, carnival-like procession in Covent Garden. A woman (likely the Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806), rides a donkey waving a fox tail, cheered by crowds. Behind her are odd figures, including one carrying a coffin marked "Memento Memori 1784" and butchers with cleavers and a banner reading "Constitutional Supporters." Fox himself is shown as a bizarre, non-human figure seated in a branch-covered chair with a flag praising "Female Patriotism." The scene is wildly exaggerated, with dense crowds, music, embracing couples, and a flag condemning election scrutiny mocking the whole event as absurd and disorderly.
