Closely fought race between three horses in foreground. By Samuel Howitt (1756/7-1823), painter and etcher. From a wealthy family, Howitt was a keen sportsman who became an artist (drawing on his sporting enthusiasms) when financial difficulties forced him to earn a living. In 1779 Howitt married Elizabeth Rowlandson, sister of the artist Thomas Rowlandson, and the two men were friends, with some similarities in their watercolour style. Nearly a set 38 plates out of 40, each headed with a portrait of the most famous race horses of the first half of the eighteenth century, and each accompanied by a description of the horse's pedigree and racing triumphs below. The horses listed include horses such as Basto, Volunteer, Bajazet, Cato and most famously Bay Arabian (or the Godolphin Arabian) and all raced between 1708 and 1755. Plates 37 and 38 missing.

Scene of the steeplechase horse race between horses Clasher and Clinker, ridden by George Osbaldeston (1786-1866) and Dick Christian (1779-1862) respectively. Osbaldeston, an MP for East Retford 1812-1818, was renowned for his racing abilites. His victory at the 1826 steeplechase race depicted here won him 1,000 guineas. Christian had a relatively respectful career in the country caring for and riding horses, though he died impoverished. Siltzer: p. 332.
