Watercolour copy of the figure from a lithograph by Denis Dighton, itself taken from a drawing by Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke. Dighton's lithograph, identifying the subject as 'Sven Rassmoussan' (the rest of the text is similar to that inscribed here) was published as a plate to Brooke's volume 'Travels through Sweden, Norway, and Finmark, to the North Cape in the Summer of 1820' (published 1823).

An Ice-field in Spitsbergen, an island of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. It was first used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, after which it was abandoned. Men on the ice throwing spears at a polar bear who is attacking them; a large ship on the ice behind.

A scene showing men in a small boat on the right, four of whom stand firing at a herd of walrus gathered on the ice to left, while an officer fends them off the ice with a boat-hook. Others can be seen in another small boat behind to right, with the Resolution and Discovery in the background. John Webber (1751-93) travelled with Captain Cook on the Third Voyage (1776-80) as the Official Artist of the expedition. His painting of this scene was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784 and is now in the National Maritime Museum. Engraved by Edmund Scott and John Heath for 'A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean' (1784), the official account of Captain Cook's Third and final voyage.
