Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723), the penultimate Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany, who 53-year reign included reactionary laws including one that prohibited Christians working for Jews. By the time of his death, thanks to him and his profligate wife (Marguerite Louise d'Orléans, a granddaughter of Henry IV of France), Tuscany was left one of the poorest nations in Europe.

Published in Isaac Bullart's 'Académie des Sciences et des Arts'. Tiberio Decianus (1509-1582) was an Italian jurist in the tradition of Renaissance humanism. Born in Udine, he studied liberal arts and then law in Padua. He practiced law in Udine and soon became a member of the city council; however in 1544 he moved his practice to Venice and three years later began to teach law at Padua. His most pioneering work was in criminal law, and his posthumous publication of 'Tractatus criminalis', was the first to discuss general principles of criminal law.

Manuscript below the portrait states 'Of Turin where I knew him in 1764. he came afterwards into England'.

The work also contained 26 wood engravings by Edward Whymper, who made the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn the following year.

He also fought at the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and was in command of the armies that would have been landed in England by the Spanish Armada of 1588. He is shown within an alcove with superb architectural details, a strap-work cartouche for a title left blank. On the reverse is a German-text biography relating to another portrait, within an ornate woodcut frame. Early copy of Jacques Callot's printed fan showing the ceremonial Battle between the guilds of weavers and dyers on the Arno in 1619, in which they fought for possession of an artificial hill in the centre of the river. Callot's print was commissioned by the Grand Duke before the event and distributed to spectators. One, mounted on card for use as a fan, can be seen held aloft by a spectator seated on the right side of the volute which forms the border. Etched by Edouard Ecqman (1639, fl), who produced copies of many of Callot's prints.

A rare bird's-eye view of Sampierdarena, now the major port of Genova, but here a residential area of mansions and ornamental gardens. Bottom right is the Lighthouse of Genova. This view was published in ''Nuernbergische Hesperides'' by Johann Christoph Volckamer (1662-1744), who was one of the first to cultivate citrus fruits north of the Alps in his orangerie. The book illustrates his fruits as well as views of the gardens and palaces of Europe.

In 1819 Papal troops demolished the community of Sonnino, arresting several hundreds of prisoners. The men were detained in the Castel Sant’Angelo, whereas the women and children were held in a workhouse adjacent to the Thermes of Diocletian. After several months the Roman authorities could not maintain the women and children at such a high expense, so released them. Pope Gregory XVI (1765 – 1846), born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari, named Mauro as a member of the religious order of the Camaldolese, was Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from 1831 to 1846. Strongly conservative and traditionalist, he opposed democratic and modernizing reforms in the Papal States and throughout Europe, seeing them as fronts for revolutionary leftism, and sought to strengthen the religious and political authority of the papacy.
