Printed and Published by W. Davison Alnwick. [n.d., c.1815.]
Etching, printed in sanguine. Plate: 160 x 235mm (6¼ x 9¼''). Trimmed, staining.
A print after a scene by William Hogarth which shows Christopher Columbus demonstrating, having cracked an egg in order to make it stand, that a discovery appears simple only after an inventive mind has made it known. By William Davison (1780 - 1858), publisher of popular prints and satires, and pharmacist, usually referred to as Davison of Alnwick. In the period between 1812 and 1817, Davison produced a number of caricatures, amusing if somewhat crudely executed plates often based on better known prints. Peter Isaac suggests that the majority date to about 1816.

CJG. [Charles Jameson Grant.]
Pub by Tregear Cheapside 1832.
Hand-coloured lithograph. Sheet: 255 x 350mm (10 x 13¾''). Trimmed. Slight damage on right.
Satire on Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover (1771 - 1851), son of George III. The Duke, with large head, huge moustache and whiskers and savage teeth, rides a galloping horse, his hands crossed on his breast; he glares at two young women, terrified, who scream, brandishing parasol, a third diving over a fence. A signpost on the road points 'To Barnes'. Ernest was the subject of more allegations in 1832, when two young women accused him of trying to ride them down as they walked near Hammersmith. The Duke had not left his grounds at Kew on the day in question, and was able to ascertain that the rider was one of his equerries, who professed not to have seen the women. Nevertheless, newspapers continued to print references to the incident, suggesting that Ernest had done what the women stated, and was cravenly trying to push blame on another. By caricaturist Charles Jameson Grant (1830 - 1852; fl.).

Under the date of 20 January he said ‘Fair, prob. lowest deg. of winter temp.’ By a happy chance this proved to be a remarkably cold day, the thermometer at sunrise standing at four degrees below zero.
