A rider and camel run towards people and a town to the right, by Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), twin brother to Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908). The pair were among the artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrators, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment. Edward expressed artistic versatility and published a number of books of fine fantasy drawings in the 1920s; they portrayed a vivid imagination and he utilised warm colouring, which suited the period. The Jungle Book (1908) was to be the last substantial commission that the brothers worked on - due to the death of Charles in that same year. The extraordinary success of their illustrations to accompany Kipling's classic tale, however, firmly established the reputation for Edward and the following year, a suite of illustrations prepared to Aesop's tales were published in The Fables of Aesop (1909).

[Canongate Tolbooth.] 68. [Canongate Tolbooth, which stands amongst a number of other fine old buildings, built in 1591, when this was a separate burgh with it own magistrate. It is a good example of the French style of architecture, with its tower and corbelled turrets, forestair, and high dormer heads. Over the archway of the door are the words "Pro patria et posteris, 1591." The building contained a jail on the ground floor, and the Countil Chambers, or Court Room, on the first floor, where the Bailies of the Canongate gave their decisions, and where the councillors of the burgh met. The building ceased to have a separate municipal existence in 1856. The projecting clock was added in the last century.]

[The British Chief Caractacus, a Prisoner Before the Roman General Ostorius, 50 AD.]

Caratacus is named by Dio Cassius as a son of the Catuvellaunian king Cunobelinus. Caratacus and his brother Togodumnus led the initial defence of Britain against Aulus Plautius's four legions, primarily using guerrilla tactics. They lost much the south-east after being defeated in two crucial battles on the rivers Medway and Thames. Togodumnus was killed and the Catuvellauni's territories were conquered. Caratacus survived and carried on the resistance further west. We next hear of him in Tacitus's Annals, leading the Silures and Ordovices of modern Wales against Plautius's successor as governor, Publius Ostorius Scapula. Finally, in 51, Scapula managed to defeat Caratacus in a set-piece battle, capturing Caratacus's wife and daughter and receiving the surrender of his brothers. Caratacus himself escaped, and fled north to the lands of the Brigantes (modern Yorkshire) where the Brigantian queen, Cartimandua handed him over to the Romans in chains. Plate II to a set of 6 etchings, 'The Pageant of Ludlow', three by Frank Brangwyn and three by Walcott, to celebrate the tercentenary of the production of Milton's Comus at Ludlow Castle. William Walcott R.E (1874 - 1943) was described by Furst as 'next to Brangwyn the greatest decorative etcher this country has produced'.

Edward Frank Gillett (1874-1927), illustrator for the 'Daily Graphic' 1898-1908. He also worked as a book illustrator, for example for Henty's 'Lion of the North', 1900. Gillett created fewer than fifty drypoints during his career, the majority untitled. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum have comprehensive collections.

An unidentified etching. A soldier looks on at a headstone that reads "Herelift C.W. Cope". Charles West Cope (1811-1890), painter of historical, literary and genre subjects, studied in Paris and first exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1833. He won a prize in a competition in 1843 to decorated the Houses of Parliament, where he complete several commissions.

Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, London. This historic street, whose 19th century residents included Rossetti, Swinburne, Whistler and Turner, was a favoured subject for many printmakers of the Victorian period. By Charles Edward Holloway (1838-97), painter and printmaker specialising in marine and landscape subjects. His work is held in several national collections, including the Tate. This impression was a gift from Holloway to his contemporary, painter and printmaker David Law (1831-1901).

[Courtyard of the New Inn, Gloucester.] 79. [The New Inn at Gloucester is amoung the dozen oldest hostels in England, having been built about 1455 by John Twining, a monk of the Abbey. It was the intention to give hospitality to the pilgrims to the shrine of Edward II., who was buried in the Abbey after being murdered (1327). People flocked to his tomb, miracles were reported, and the New Inn was built to accomodate the crowds. This ancient inn undoubtedly was the halting-place for countless pilgrims, and it remains a striking timbered building with a fine galleried courtyard. It was near here that Robert Raikes, the Father of Sunday Schools, was born.]

Offered with original frame labels, one recording details including price ($75), a second annotated in pen by the artist "One of the rarest prints I made...out of print now". By Philip Kappel (American, 1901 - 1981), etcher, illustrator and painter. Born Hartford, Connecticut in 1901.

A scene in Burma showing oriental men in boat being rowed towards shore, warehouse buildings and moored larger boats in the background. Charles William Cain (1893 - 1962) travelled in the Middle East, and lived in Baghdad for some years. A student of Camberwell School of Art, he was then an illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesburg Star. During the Great War, he served with the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia until the Armistice. In 1920-21, he studied at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short.

He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and was, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century."

This etching is one of the very few etchings produced over four years by the Detmold twins for distribution at Christmas. This impression is double Initalled for both brothers and signed in pencil by Edward. The brothers' individual monograms appear upper left and right in the etching. Edward supervised and edition of the etchings in a very limited number of proofs in 1920. An Eagle with wings spread stands on a branch, below is a bag with 'amitié ' written on it. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) was twin brother to Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908). The pair were among the artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrators, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment. Edward expressed artistic versatility and published a number of books of fine fantasy drawings in the 1920s; they portrayed a vivid imagination and he utilised warm colouring, which suited the period. The Jungle Book (1908) was to be the last substantial commission that the brothers worked on - due to the death of Charles in that same year. The extraordinary success of their illustrations to accompany Kipling's classic tale, however, firmly established the reputation for Edward and the following year, a suite of illustrations prepared to Aesop's tales were published in The Fables of Aesop (1909).

Johannot and Montgolfier had paper mills at Annonay in France. The balloonist Montgolfier brothers were from the same town so it is likely they were from the same family.

Coloured etching signed by both artists, 250 x 170mm (9¾ x 6¾"), with very large margins.
A woodland scene; a woman wearing a stola observes naked fairies frolicking amongst the toadstools. John Shapland (1865-1929) was a painter from the Southwest of England. He mainly specialised in seascapes and landscapes largely in watercolour but occasionally in oil. He exhibited at the RA, Paris Salon, and in the USA. Two of his exhibits at the RA were entitled 'Fairy Led' and 'Paradise Lost'. He was the principle of the Exeter School of Art from 1899 to 1913. William (also known as Walter) Henry Sweet (1889-1943) was a British painted and etcher. He studied at the Exeter School of Art under the guidance of his friend John Shapland. He worked locally and exhibited work at the Devon and Exeter Annual Exhibition at Elands Art Gallery in the 1900s. After the First World War, he moved to Dundee, Scotland, and was employed by James Valentine and Sons as a commercial illustrator.

A man in a sombrero-type hat harvesting crops with a sickle as dusk falls; two other men and an ox in the background. An atmospheric scene somewhere in central or South America. The Latin American artist Joaquin Macias is known to have lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Nicaragua, and to have visited Chile in 1951. In a hand written note discovered with a group of his etchings, he mentions a period of "30 years residence" in Britain. He seems to have etched most of his plates in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Only the man in the centre, who wears a hat, has a place set at the long table; he is surrounded by a crowd of people, two of whom toast more people leaning into the room from the window above. In a semi-circular frame.
William Strang R.A. R.E. (Scottish, 1859 - 1921), chief pupil of Alphonse Legros. He was one of the original members of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and his work was a part of their first exhibition in 1881. Some of his early plates were published in Portfolio and other art magazines.
