Survey & Plans of Woolley Manor in the County of Somerset, the Property of Miss Eliz: Gunning.
Survey & Plans of Woolley Manor in the County of Somerset, the Property of Miss Eliz: Gunning.
Survey'd by John Hinde in 1760, and planned by Isaac Johnson, Surveyor Woodbridge Suff: 1798, &9.
7 estate plans, 2 figurative vignettes, 1 elaborate frontispiece and 1 view of Woolley church in pen and ink and watercolour separated by blank leaves, in original card wrapper and complete as index. Sheet size 233 x 200mm. Binding extremely worn and chipped, with tatty extremities. Leaves partially disbound.
A set of high quality manuscript surveys, far more decorative than is standard on maps of estates. Each map shows a unique compass point design and corresponds to an index on facing page with elegant calligraphic title within a cartouche in ink and watercolour. 2 leaves with classical female figures in ovals mark the beginning and end of the volume. These and the vignette view of the local church further demonstrate the high degree of draughtsmanship and skill of the artist, Isaac Johnson. Johnson [1754 - 1835], a Suffolk man through and through, practised as a surveyor in Woodbridge for 50 years and he produced detailed maps of many estates throughout East Anglia. He was also a gifted artist, copyist and antiquarian draughtsman. This survey he copied from an earlier work by a John Hinde, perhaps at the request of a Reverend Gunning of Sutton in Suffolk who it is known ordered drawings of Gretna Green and 'Cupids from Cipriani', and may have been a relation of the Elizabeth Gunning who owned Woolley Manor. Includes 4 loose sheets of ephemera relating to the Poulett family, including 2 birth certificates, an engraved genealogical chart and an 1851 certificate of induction of one William Henry Poulett into the 'Grand Lodge of Ireland'. The Pouletts were an ancient Somerset family who it can be reasonably assumed resided at Woolley Manor during the 19th century.

To Heneage Legge, Esqr. This Series of Engravings from Subjects executed in Ancient stained Glass, in the Windows of the Hall at Aston, near Birmingham is... Inscribed by... W. Fowler.
W. Fowler Sculpt.
[London: for the Author, 1807-8.]
Book with Titlepage and ten fine hand-coloured engraved plates (disbound): seven Norman Earls of Chester and two Saxon Earls of Mercia, plus genealogical chart frontispiece. All mounted on thick card and presented in original marble card wrappers, atlas folio (670 x 495mm, 26½ x 19½"), printed title label to upper cover. Also included is a watercolour drawing to separate, smaller sheet captioned "The foot of the great Staircase Aston Hall" in pencil. c.1872 armorial bookplate of Berdmore Compton of Atherstone Hall. Boards scuffed and rubbed, with tatty and heavily chipped extremities. Plates good, in vibrant original colour.
William Fowler (1761 - 1832), architect, engraver and draughtsman, was born at Winterton, Lincolnshire, where he became an architect and builder, and about 1796 made drawings of Roman pavements discovered there. These were so much admired that he took them to London to be engraved, where he studied the process of copper-plate engraving. He published three volumes in total, containing coloured engravings of twenty-five pavements, thirty-nine subjects from painted glass, five brasses and incised slabs, four fonts, and eight miscellaneous subjects. He also executed at least twenty nine engravings, mostly of objects of antiquity, which were never published. He became acquainted with Sir Joseph Banks, Sir Walter Scott, and other celebrities, and was once at least presented to the royal family at Windsor. Aston Hall is a municipally owned Jacobean mansion in Aston, Birmingham. Heneage Legge of Idlicote, Warwickshire, was the son of the judge of the same name (1704 - 1759). This is a handsome production; very rarely does a complete set of these vibrant designs come to the market.

It was also there that he famously played with a friend from 'New England', Benjamin Franklin. The best player in France at the time, Legall de Kermeur, taught him. In 1774 the Parloe's chess club, on St James Street in London, was created, and Philidor obtained a remuneration as a chess master every year, for a regular season from February to June. Philidor stayed faithful to this agreement until the end of his life and he was replaced by Verdoni only after his death. In December 1792 he had to leave France permanently for England, fleeing the French Revolution, because his name figured on the banishment list established by the Convention nationale. His admirers and friends included the French philosophers Voltaire, Rousseau and the famous actor David Garrick. Ink ownership inscriptions to front free-endpapers.

Wien in der Wucherischen Buchhandlung 1786.
Engraved titlepage, frontispiece, and 12 engravings, bound with single stitch, largest 115 x 85mm, most c.94 x 70mm.
A set of illustrations from an early Vienna edition of August Gottlieb Meissner's 'Bianka Capello'. Meissner (1753 - 1807) was an author and poet who became a professor in Prague in 1785, and in 1805 director of the Lyceum at Fulda. He wrote plays and stories and was active as a translator. His work has a pronounced moralizing trend. Alfred von Meißner was his grandson. An Election Ball, in Poetical Letters from Mr. Inkle, at Bath, to His Wife at Gloucester: with a Poetical Address to John Miller, Esq. at Batheaston Villa. [Inscribed in ink on inside cover:] H Wigley April 2. 1788.
[Christopher Anstey] The Third Edition. By the Author of the New Bath Guide.
Printed for the Author by S. Hazard, Bath; And Sold by Dodsley, Pall-Mall, and Wilkie, St. Paul's-Church-Yard, London: Fletcher and Hodson, at Cambridge; and by S. Hazard, and all the other Booksellers at Bath. M.DCC.LXXVI. [1776.] Price Two Shillings and Six-Pence.
Book; 4to. Original boards. Slighty tatty.
Engraved frontispiece by C. W. Bampfylde. Christopher Anstey (1724-1805) was an English writer and poet. His early writing life showed little success but when he moved to Bath, his 1766 publication of penned rhymed letters 'The New Bathe Guide', the satirical poem of considerable sparkle, had immediate success. This 1776 publication of Poetical Letters sustained the reputation won by the Guide. This publication consists of a series of letters from Mr. Inkle to his wife Dinah, at Gloucester, describing a 1775 ball given to celebrate Sir John Sebright’s re-election to Parliament as member for Bath. Inkle is scarcely a member of polite society, but he is ambitious and would very much like to become one. He brings along his daughter Margery (“Madge”), who has her own aspirations to become fashionable, with disastrous consequences, and we see the shortcomings and eccentricities of Bath society through his naive eyes.

A view of 10th Hussars in drill order on the plains near to Kirkee in Mahaarashtra, India. Following the Battle of Kirkee in 1817, in which the British East India Company defeated the Marathas, the British set up a cantonment at Kirkee in which the 10th Hussars were stationed between 1846 and 1855. The sweeping plains of India provided the perfect environment for the cavalry to practice their drill manoeuvers on a large scale, something which was not possible in England.

Dessiné par C. Monnet. Gravé par Helman.
Engraving with large margins. Plate: 450 x 280mm (17¾ x 11"). Slight paper tone and surface dirt.
Depiction of the battle which took place between the Royalists and the French Revolutionary Troops on the 13 Vendémiaire Year 4 (5th October 1795), a battle which was to instigate Napoleon Bonaparte's rapid advancement. The Revolutions anti-catholic sentiments created strong anti-revolutionary feelings in western France, feelings which boiled over into an insurrection. The Royalists, supported by British troops, having been victorious in several battles marched on Paris. Royalists within the city began demonstrations which soon turned violent. A young General Bonaparte suceeded in defeating the Royalists, essentially extinguishing the threat to the Revolution, and was promoted to General of the Division.

The Prevailing Candidate, or the Election carried by Bribery and the Devil. Here's a Minion sent down to a Corporate Town ...
[n.d. c.1722]
Scarce engraving, sight size 165 x 175mm (6½ x 7"). Old mount stain.
Satire on the 1722 general election. A grand room with two long windows and a pier glass in the middle; a screen with seven folds is located to the left of this. Three men are visible on the right, one of whom is holding an office staff. They are reflected in the glass behind the screen. A candidate for office approaches a voter from the left side of the screen, taking him by the right hand while placing a purse in the man's pocket with his left. The voter, whose leg is chained, is described in the verses as a corporation member in a borough where only members of that kind could cast ballots. A clergyman standing in a doorway assures his wife that "bribery no sin." The voter is touched on the shoulder by the devil, who is hovering over the candidate and carrying a blank scroll. One of the two boys in the front, who is holding a wooden shoe—a representation of the repressive French regime—points to the transaction. The screen itself has small stars all over it. At the top are the names of several acts that the previous government passed, along with the years 1715–1722, written on seven folds: "Quarantine Act.../South Sea Act/Act to indemnify S.S. V[illai]ns/Part of ye Succession Act repeal'd/Septennial Act."

Ah Mayeux! Mayeux!! chian li li li!...
J. Grandville. Lith. de Langlume.
On s'abonne chez Aubert, Galerie Vero Dodat [Paris, n.d., c.1832].
Lithograph with hand colouring, sheet 270 x 360mm. 10½ x 14¼".
Children chasing a rather freakish man dressed in female clothes (in the manner of 'Little Bo Peep') out of town. Monsieur Mayeux was a fictional hunchback character created by Charles Traviès, who depicted a series of his 'Aventures'. For the Paris periodical 'La Caricature'. Under the regime of Charles X until the Revolution of 1830 the political caricature was prohibited by censorship. In November 1830 Charles Philipon (1800 - 1862) started publishing 'La Caricature', devoted to political satire. In 1832 he published the 'Charivari' with his brother-in-law Gabriel Aubert, with whom he founded the famous publishing house Maison Aubert.

Lithograph with some hand colouring, sheet 255 x 330mm. 10 x 13".
A contemporary satire on reactions to the solar eclipse of July 1832; a military officer (centre) tries to rouse a man in theatrical costume from his slumber in a chair, gesturing towards the celestial phenomenon (coloured) upper right. Rows of sleeping men in armchairs to right, several figures looking through telescopes to left. The unrest of 1830 brought about the popular overthrow of the entrenched power within France and by summer 1832 the political scene was quite altered and the eclipse is used as an analogy. For the Paris periodical 'La Caricature', numbered 'No.60' upper right.
