Cupid Refusing Love to Desire.
Drawn by F. Bartolozzi R.A. [...] F. Vieira Junior inv.t [...] Engraved by John Vendramini.
London Published May 1 1800 by F. Bartolozzi & J. Vendramini.
Stipple, platemark 365 x 475mm (14¼ x 18½"), with large large margins.
Mythological subject after Francesco Bartolozzi. Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case, getting around the rules by electing Bartolozzi as a painter). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton enticed Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. One of few prints engraved after a drawing by Bartolozzi rather than by Bartolozzi from another artist's designs.

Etching printed in sepia, platemark 255 x 310mm (10 x 12¼"), with very large margins.
Very dramatic image showing Dejanira abducted by the centaur Nessus. Etching by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815), Florentine engraver and founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. After meeting George III's librarian Richard Dalton in Italy in 1763, Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. This is the medium employed here, one of many prints he made from designs by his fellow Italian, G.B. Cipriani (it was published in 'A Set of Etchings by Francis Bartolozzi R.A. in Imitation of Drawings from the Sketches of the Late John Baptist Cipriani R.A.' in 1788.

Engraving, sheet 195 x 150mm (7¾ x 6"). Trimmed; glued to album sheet at margins. Collector's mark of P.H. Lankrink lower left. Loss top right & bottom
Engraving formerly in the collection of Prosper Henry Lankrink (1628-92), painter and collector. In addition to his own practice Lankrink worked in the studio of Sir Peter Lely, Charles II's principal painter, where he was employed to paint flowers, ornaments, landscape backgrounds, and occasionally draperies. After Lely's death, Lankrink helped organise the sale of the contents of Lely's studio, purchasing many items for himself. Unfortunately Lankrink's taste for collecting led him to incur debts he was unable to repay during his lifetime, and as a result after his own death, his collection was sold off in order to repay his creditors.

The nymph Echo by Agostino Tofanelli (1770-1834) and Giovanni Folo (1764-1836), after the oil painting 'Echo Flying from Narcissus' (1798) by Guy Head (1753-1800). As told by Ovid in Met III, Echo flees Narcissus' presence, humiliated and distraught, after he rejects her. The engravers have embellished Head's original composition with the addition of a figure in the background on the far bank on the water's edge, which is perhaps Narcissus.
