Maria F. Malibran. [Ink:] We have observed her in different points of view: we have seen her exalted on the dangerous pinnacle of worldly prosperity, surrounded by fawning and flattering friends, and an admiring world. We have seen her marked out by prejudice as an object of dislike. We have seen her bowed down by pain and bodily weakness; but never did we see her forget the urbanity of her sex, her conscious dignity as a rational creature, or a fervent aspiration after the highest degree of attainable perfection. We have seen her on the bed of sickness, enduring pain with the patience of a Christian, with the firm belief that the afflictions of this life are but for a moment!

A singer stands in profile to the right, his mouth wide open. In his right hand he holds blank sheets of paper evidently intended for music. His hair is in an enormously long queue bound with ribbon. His hat is under his right arm. He wears a large cravat, his shirt sleeves are frilled but his stockings are conspicuously patched. Probably the portrait of a French singer at Marylebone (then often called 'Marrowbone') Gardens depicted in the stock character of the beggarly Frenchman dressed in shabby finery. The British Museum describes the sitter as Edward Meredith (c.1741-1824), bass singer of Liverpool. According to Fleming: ''One of the most acclaimed singers to be in the choir was Edward Meredith (d.1809), who had been discovered by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in a cooper's workshop. Wynn subsequently paid for Meredith's education and launched him into a solo career. Meredith arrived in Durham in December 1778 and received a salary [as a lay-clerk] of £50 with an initial £10 given gratis. He quickly became crucial to the choir's concerts and filled the role of Polytheme in Acis and Galatea the following February. He also sang in Newcastle that same month''.
