Portrait, half length facing foward but looking to left, holding a rolled paper, wearing cloak and curled hair. Eyles Irwin (c.1751-1817), the Irish poet and writer. He rose in the East India Company from a servant in civil capacity to superintendent of the company's affairs in China.

William Knibb (1803-1845) was an English Baptist minister and missionary to Jamaica who is chiefly known for his work to free slaves; seen here in 1842 preaching in answer to criticism of the conduct of missionaries over the slaves. Here also he has returned to his home town to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Baptist Missionary Society.

While work to strengthen London Bridge, including the clearing of all buildings on the bridge, a fire broke out that destroyed the central drawbridge. Because the fire began on both sides of the bridge it is believed that it was arson. A temporary bridge was open to carriages less than a month later.

Gretna's most famous priest Joseph Paisley, described as 'a big, rough, hard-drinking borderer,' who moonlighted as a smuggler, a tobacconist, and a fisherman. Gretna became known as the 'Caledonian Temple of Hymen' in the late eigteenth century and lampooned as the centre of the 'marriage trade'. One of the main characters in Charles Stuart's comic operetta Gretna Green (1783), a hit afterpiece at the Haymarket theatre during the 1780s and 90s, was loosely based on Priestley.

A keyplate to George Cattermole's picture of the Diet of Speyer of 1529, with the delegates numbered (key on the backing sheet, not present). The diet's rejection of further reform of the church led a group of delegates to protest, coining the name 'Protestant'.
