The siege of Koroni by a Russian fleet during the 'Orlov Revolt', a Greek independence struggle in 1770. Prompted by a lavish promise of Russian aid, the Greeks rebelled but were shocked by the small fleet sent under the command of Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov (1737-1808). Although Orlov crushed the Turkish navy at the Battle of Cesme (Chios), there were not enough land troops, so the rebellion was crushed, with huge reprisals. This Print forms one of the Series of Greek Portaits (4.th Part) now in course of publication in London, by A. Friedel & Sold by the principal Book & Printsellers in Town & Country. June 1826.
Coloured lithograph. Sheet 486 x 350mm.
Portrait of Ionnis Logothetis, who represented Eastern Mainland Greece at the First National Assembly of 1821 during the Greek War of Independence. Provenance: Bracebridge Archive. Selina Bracebridge, maiden-name Mills, was a pupil of Samuel Prout. Her husband was the Bracebridge celebrated in Washington Irving’s Bracebridge Hall. From the mid-1830s, they settled for some years in Athens. He owned large properties in Karea and Euboca, the latter of which he sold to the Noel family; and they both lived in a large house on Adrianou Street. 1850, saw the publication of Mr. Bracebridge’s 'Letter on the Affairs of Greece'. Bracebridge was Florence Nightingale’s uncle. Their time spent in Athens and the Levant is not clear; however it seems likely that they were settled in Athens from about 1835 to 1839, with frequent trips to England. Similarly, it is most likely that on their return back to the UK, they continued to own property in Greece. A painting by Selina is in the possession of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

[Chart of Port Piraeus, and the Bay of Phalerum, &c.]
[Chart of Port Piraeus, and the Bay of Phalerum, &c.]
Drawn by A. Arrowsmith.
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraved map by T. Foot, with large margins. 325 x 495mm, 12¾ x 19½".
Map of Piraeus (the port of Athens) with Phaleron Bay (or Faliro) the original port, superceded by the construction of Piraeus, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Stuart (1713–88) and Revett (1720–1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'. This map was published in Volume 4; the general map of Attica in the same volume was signed by Arrowsmith.

[Leipzig, 1725.]
Engraving with very large margins. 305 x 430mm (12 x 17"). Spotting, creasing.
The Colossus of Rhodes, standing astride the entrance to the harbour. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was built in BC 280, when it was one of the tallest statues in the world. It stood for a little over 50 years, brought down by an earthquake in BC 226. The plate was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences in his building.

Published by R. Bowyer, Historic Gallery, Pall Mall, 1803.
Hand-coloured aquatint. Plate 305 x 386mm. 12 x 15¼".
Part of a hidden Doric columned temple at Lindos on the Island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, Greece. Founded by the Dorians led by the King Tlepolemus of Rhodes, Lindos became a major trading centre by the 8th century. In medieval times most buildings fell into disuse and in the 14th century many were partly overlaid by a massive fortress built on the acropolis by the knights of St John to defend the island against the Ottomans. The acropolis is one of the greatest sites in the world.
