Gads Hill Place in Higham, Kent, the country home of Charles Dickens from 1857 until he died there from a stroke in 1870. His father had shown him the house when he was nine years old telling him that if he worked hard enough, one day he would own such a house. The house, a Grade 1 listed building, has been a school since 1924.

Set of four rare lithographs, each image c.120 x 170mm, 4¾ x 6¾" (one plate in portrait orientation). Two plates with small tears at lower right corners.
Aspects of the pleasure garden in Gravesend, Kent. The gardens were laid out in 1837 by George Jones (a businessman from Islington in north London) in one of the disused chalk pits in Northfleet, covering an area of 17 acres. Their full title was the 'Kent Zoological and Botanical Gardens Institution’. They became a favourite destination for thousands of Londoners during good weather, many travelling by paddle steamer down the River Thames to disembark at the pier built to service the gardens. They closed in 1901. These views were printed for visitors as souvenirs, from a press in the gardens themselves; they represent a scarce and interesting pictorial record of the early history of Victorian outdoor recreation.

Lymne Castle, with a distant View of the French Coast. It is situated on the descent of a Hill, about two miles West of Hythe: Its remains bear marks of great Antiquity, but when, or by whom founded, is not certain: It has been suppos'd to be the famous Portius Lemanis; but that the Sea had retired from its spacious Haven, once a Harbour for 250 Danish Vessels, Anno 893. Here it was that Prince Edward, exacted the Oath from the Barons of the Cinque Ports.

The harbour of Margate, Kent, from Philip James De Loutherbourg's great work 'Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain'. This series of six large aquatints had been originally published by Bowyer in 1801, with plates etched by J.C. Stadler; for this second edition the plates were re-engraved by John Hill, with only slight differences. The German-born painter had already made his name in Paris before moving to London in 1771, where he became the principal scenery designer for Garrick at London's Drury Lane Theatre. Also in the theatre, he invented the 'Eidophusikon', a moving panorama enhanced with mirrors, displayed with accompanying music.

A scene at Penshurst, a village in the Sevenoaks district of Kent: an elderly woman and terrier dog approaching a gatehouse walkway with a distant view of a church. The village grew up around Penshurst Place, the ancestral home of the Sidney family. Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin (1870 - 1935), artist and illustrator, was born in Slough, the son of a builder, and studied at the South Kensington school of Art. He worked as a comic illustrator in the 1890's before achieving great success as a sporting artist. He retired to Majorca in 1930.

Explanation and Key to plan and elevation left and right. Sheerness was the focus of an attack by the Dutch navy in June 1667, when 72 hostile ships during the Raid on the Medway compelled the little 'sandspit fort', to surrender and landed a force which for a short while occupied the town. Impressed by the civil behaviour of the Dutch marines - they paid for their dinner - the town reinvited the Dutch Marine Corps for the third centennial of the raid. Pepys at Gravesend remarked in his diary 'we do plainly at this time hear the guns play' and in fear departed to Brampton in Huntingdonshire. Sheerness was also the site of a Royal Dockyard which, although not as large as those at Chatham and Deptford was still of some importance in Tudor and Stuart England. During the Victorian age a warship was built which still exists - HMS Gannet (an 'Osprey' class Sloop) which was launched on 31 August 1878.

Sheerness, beside the mouth of the River Medway on the northwest corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent. Sheerness began as a fort built in the 16th century to protect the River Medway from naval invasion. In 1665, plans were first laid by the Navy Board for a Royal Navy dockyard where warships might be provisioned and repaired, a site favored by Samuel Pepys, then Clerk of the Acts of the navy, for shipbuilding over Chatham. After the raid on the Medway in 1667, the older fortification was strengthened; in 1669 the Royal Navy dockyard was established, where warships were stocked and repaired until its closure in 1960.
