King George IV (1762-1830). George, Prince of Wales was given no official duties by his father King George III. Jockeying for power, he sought to undermine the King by siding with the Whig opposition led by Charles James Fox. When the King went temporarily insane in 1788 William Pitt, the Tory Prime Minister, proposed a restricted Regency to protect the King's interests. The King's recovery three months later ended the 'Regency Crisis'. Pitt's Regency Bill was revived during the King's final illness. George was sworn Regent in 1811, crowned King in 1820 and ruled until 1830.

[Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey]
[Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey] Veritas Ex Cineribus Reviviscit Aetatis Suae 57 [...]
P. Vandrebanc Sculp.
Are to be Sold at Thomas Cherets in James Street Covent Garden.
Engraving, sheet 340 x 235mm (13½ x 9¼"). Trimmed and glued to backing sheet at edges.
Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey (1621-78), magistrate, died in mysterious circumstances soon after becoming involved in the scandal of the Popish Plot in September 1678. He took depositions from Titus Oates, later to be revealed as having invented the 'plot' to kill Charles II and his brother James, duke of York, despite being uncertain whether he should have done so. Soon after, Godfrey's body was found lying in a ditch near Primrose Hill in London, with a sword run through him (strangulation marks were also found). A verdict of murder was brought in, and almost inevitably blame was laid on the Catholic community once the revelations about Oates' deposition emerged. This print, with its assertion Godfrey was 'Murthered by Papists', typifies this response, although in fact his murder was never satisfactorily solved.

Elizabeth Gunning (1733-90) met James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Argyll, at a party in London. Robert Walpole reported that he insisted that they marry that night, and called for a local parson to perform the ceremony. However, without a license, calling of banns and a ring, the parson refused, so they married that night in Mayfair Chapel. Her sister Maria (1733-60) was also a beauty who married well, in her case George William Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry. Andrew Miller (d.1763), was an engraver in Dublin. Challoner Smith notes 'Nearly all the prints by Miller are of very great rarity' (p.921).

[Printed and published by A. Friedel, 24, Greek Street, Soho, London.]
Lithograph on india, proof before letters, very scarce. Printed area 185 x 255mm (7¼ x 9").
The fort at Satara near Pune, a seat of Maratha power in the 17th and 18th centuries, used as a British cantonment in the 19th. From 'Eight Most Splendid Views of India, sketched by an Officer in the Indian Army', showing hill forts in forts situated in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, western India. Although Baron Adam Friedel is sometimes quoted as the artist as well as the publisher, it is unlikely that he served as a soldier in India; he was already a successful publisher, particularly of portraits of the leaders of the Greek revolution.

[Philip IV of Spain]
[Philip IV of Spain]
Vandyke. Geddes fc.
Etching with very large margins, platemark 230 x 155mm (8¾ x 6"). 'Printed by E Lumsden' in pencil lower right.
Portrait of Philip IV (1605-1665), king of Spain and Portgual. He is remembered for his patronage of the arts, including such artists as Diego Velazquez, and his rule over Spain during the challenging period of the Thirty Years War (1618-48). Etched after a portrait by van Dyck, by the Scottish painter and etcher Andrew Geddes (1783-1844). This plate was one of ten published by Geddes in 1826.
