Giovanna Baccelli (1774, fl.- d.1801), dancer. Baccelli, first appeared at the King's Theatre, Haymarket in 1774. She reached the peak of her career during the 1780-1 season when she appeared with Gaetan Vestris and his son Auguste in several important ballets devised by Noverre. She also danced in Venice in 1783-4, and at the Paris Opéra as late as 1788. Baccelli was equally known as a mistress of John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset (1745-99), who had set up Baccelli in a suite of rooms at Knole by October 1779. Baccelli accompanied him to Paris in 1783 when he was appointed Ambassador to France. They entertained lavishly, patronising the Paris Opéra, and were admitted to the friendship of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Horace Walpole records that when the Duke was awarded the Order of the Garter in 1788, Baccelli danced at the Opéra wearing the blue Garter ribbon around her head. As the events of the French Revolution unfolded, the pair returned to Knole, where Baccelli remained until their amicable parting in 1789. Engraved by John Jones after the portrait by Thomas Gainsborough (exhibited 1782) which hangs in Tate Britain. Gainsborough was well-acquainted with many theatre people, including Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the famous dramatist and part-owner of the King's Theatre. When this portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1782, Gainsborough's portrait of the Duke of Dorset was withdrawn, presumably for reasons of decorum. As well as commissioning this portrait, the Duke also patronised Gainsborough's great rival Joshua Reynolds, who painted Baccelli in 1783.

Robert Bruce (1626-1685), 1st Earl of Ailesbury, in his peer's robes, holding wand and coronet. Chaloner Smith comments 'some portions of the work and the inscription (in which the title is engraved, "Ailesburg",) appear to be executed by a foreign hand, other portions resemble English work'. This plate is a copy of another rare mezzotint, engraved (again according to CS) by either John Smith or John Faber but unsigned.

Angelica Kauffma (1741-1807), a Swiss-Austrian painter who lived in England from 1766 to 1781, during which time she was one of only two women amongst the thirty-six founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts. Kauffman was very involved with the printmaking trade and collaborated with printmakers, resulting in a great number of prints were made from her designs, usually in the new 'stipple' process.

Georgiana Maria, youngest daughter of Lieutenant-colonel Cottin [1794-1859], wife of John Fleming Leicester, 1st Baron de Tabley, of Tabley house in Cheshire. Her beauty was captured by Sir Thomas Lawrence in the famous portrait of her in the character of Hope. This is a rare engraving after the painting by William Owen R.A. (1769-1825) that hangs at Tabley. The engraver is uncertain: it is possibly the suppressed plate by Charles Turner (1773-1857). William Owen worked as an apprentice to Charles Catton, R.A., for seven years, starting in 1786. He entered the Royal Academy as a student in 1791, receiving encouragement from, among others, Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was elected R.A. in 1806, became portrait painter to the Prince of Wales in 1810, and was appointed principal painter to the Prince Regent in 1813.

Very rare mezzotint. 705 x 480mm (27¾ x 19"). Several tears in the margins, one entering the inscription area, with spotting.
Full-length portrait of Sir John Fleming Leicester (1762-1827), 1st Lord de Tabley, in peer's robes. It was incomplete when Joshua Reynolds died in 1792, so it was finished by his pupil, James Northcote. According to the Tabley House Collection (owned by the University of Manchester) the painting was reworked in 1826 (a year before Leicester's death) by John Simpson. This mezzotint was engraved after Leicester had died. The engraver is unknown; the BM describes an untitled plate (1852,1116.547) with the same description, published by John Jeffryes (d.1804.),

The stippling of the background, clothes and hat is crayon-manner, in contrast to the fine stippling of the face. The BM suggests the frame label was originally engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and altered to be the trade card of F.B. Daniell.
