A view of Chamonix with Mont Blanc in the background. Plate 17 of 'La Suisse et la Savoie par Eugène Ciceri d'après les vues photographiées par Martens, photographe de S.M. l'Empereur' (1859-65), which recorded 'numerous locations still unknown or little known in topographical illustration' (Gattlen). In 1844 Frédéric Martens (1809-75) had been sent to Chamonix by the French government to experiment with photography in extreme conditions, producing some of the first photographs of the high alps. In the early 1850s he exhibited panoramic views in London and Paris, fuelling interest in the scenery of the region, so returned for this series. As his medium, daguerreotype, prevented easy reproduction, his images had to be lithographed (by Étienne Eugène Cicéri) for publication.

Louis-Jacques Goussier is famous for his work on Diderot's encyclopedia. He was the first drawer to be hired on that project, in 1747 and he did himself more than 900 plates and directed the drawing of the others. Robert Bénard (1734 – 1777) was a French engraver. Specialized in the technique of engraving, Robert Bénard is mainly famous for having supplied a significant amount of plates (at least 1,800) to the Encyclopédie by Diderot & d'Alembert from 1751.

A third fills his hat with potatoes which have fallen from the donkey's basket, while a fourth stands with clenched fists facing the old woman. On the collar of a bulldog beside him is inscribed 'Barrymore' (reversed, and only legible in a mirror). The print was published in the 'Attic Miscellany' in 1791.

He was the leading founder of the African Association, the British organization dedicated to the exploration of Africa, and a member of the Society of Dilettanti, which helped to establish the Royal Academy.

A handsome view of Birmingham Town Hall in Victoria Square, Birmingham. Joseph Hansom and Edward Welch were chosen as the architects. Construction began on April 27, 1832 with an expected completion date of 1833. However, Hansom went bankrupt during construction, having tendered too low. The contractors were also losing money. Three guarantors donated money for the building; W. P. Lloyd, John Welch and Edward Tench. With the injection of this money, the building was successfully opened for the delayed Birmingham Triennial Musical Festival on October 7, 1834, despite the building still being unfinished. During construction, on January 26, 1833, two workers were killed when a 70 foot crane constructed to install the roof trusses broke and the pulley block failed. Architect Charles Edge was commissioned in 1835 to repair weaknesses to the design of the building. He was also commissioned for the extension of the building in 1837 and again in 1850.

A satirical election report in the style of horse racing. Presumably this is the results of the 1844 Birmingham by-election; making the horses 'Sir John's Candour,' Richard Spooner (1783 – 1864) the winner, 'Basewig, 'William Scholefield (1809 – 1867) in second place and 'Mr. Sleekface's Dun Horse Broad Brim,' Joseph Sturge (1793 – 1859) placing third. 'Jacob Wilson, clerk of the course,' refers to the Town crier of Birmingham, Jacob Wilson (1799 - c.1833) who would have annouced the election results to the people. Thomas James Vale had a long career as a printer at several different sites such as at 3 Freeman Street (1832-c.1844), and finally at 113 Moor Street (1850-55). During his time at Freeman Street he reprinted on broadsides extracts from newspapers on topical events such as French losses at the siege of Antwerp (1832), fire at the Palace of Westminster (1834), 'Dreadful Riots at Dudley' (1834) and a 'great discovery' (1836).

A fish-faced man looks at a menu in a restaurant. This satire is an early example of product placement: on the wall behind is an advert for 'Charles Wright's Champagne', one of several references to the brand found in Hunt's satires. The cheapness of the champagne led critics to allege that it was not of French origin, causing Wright to sue. The first state: Thomas Mclean reissued this plate in 1827.
