Angelica Kauffman Pinx. W.m Wynne Ryland Delin.t et Sculp.t.
Published January 3 1780 by W.W. Ryland London.

Two plates illustrating events described in Rapin's History of England. The first shows the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Edward Longshanks, heir to the English throne, in June 1272, during the 8th-9th Crusade. Although he killed his attacker he was weakened by the poisoned blade and could no longer campaign. On his journey home he discovered that his father had died in November: he did not reach England until early August 1274 and was crowned on the 19th. After the death of Eleanor in 1290 Edward marked the route of her funerary procession with the twelve 'Eleanor Crosses', including Charing Cross. The second scene shows Elizabeth Grey asking for the return of the lands of her dead husband, Sir John Grey, who had been killed at the Second Battle of St Albans in 1461, fighting for the Lancastrian cause. Three years later she secretly married the Yorkist Edward IV; her son, Edward V, was deposed by Richard III.
