A proof state of one of the finest 18th century images: a scene of fashionably-dressed people promenading and listening to musicians in Carlton House gardens, under tall leafy trees with no sign of the house. At the centre is George, Prince of Wales, in a tricorn hat and with a lady on each arm. A group of musicians are on the far left, one playing a small trumpet. The Prince of Wales gave the ballad singers breakfast in his garden, where they were all drawn from life on the spot by Bunbury. According to De Vesme and Calabi, Bartolozzi only engraved the faces of the figures. De Vesme 2549.

[Georgiana Quentin & Elizabeth Henrietta Conyngham] Mrs Q. [&] Windsor Castle.
Drawn by Huet Villiers. Engraved by W.Blake. [&] Drawn by J.B. [John Barrow] Engraved by G.Maile.
[London: c.1822.]
Pair of colour printed stipples. Ea. c.340 x 245mm (13½ x 9¾"). Both plates trimmed just within platemark, some creasing on "Mrs Q". Very fine colour.
Half length portrait of Georgiana Quentin, with Eton College in the background, and Elizabeth Henrietta Conyngham playing a pianoforte, with Windsor in the background. A fine and scarce pair: from a scrapbook. Georgiana Quentin (d.1853) was the wife of Lieutenant-Colonel George Augustus Quentin, aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent 1811-25, when he was appointed Equerry to the Crown Stables. She was widely believed to be the Prince's mistress, and was referred to as 'Harriet Quentin' or 'Mrs Quentin'. This portrait is coppied from one that appeared in an 1822 pamphlet, ''Memoirs of the Celebrated Mrs Q---' by "Edward Eglantine", a pseudonym of Radical publisher William Benbow (1787-1864). Elizabeth Henrietta Conyngham (d.1839) was the daughter of Elizabeth Conyngham, Marchioness Conyngham, George IV's mistress. While William Blake experimented with both his poetry and printing he had to continue to engrave the work of others to stave off abject poverty. See BM 1852,1009.580 for 'Windsor Castle'.

Scarcity in India [&] British Plenty.
Painted by H. Singleton. Engraved by C: Knight.
Pub.d Jan.y 1st 1794 by C. Knight, Stoke, Bucks, & Random Stainbank & Sayer, 17 Old Bond Street, London.
Pair of stipple engravings with hand colour. Each c. 600 x 455mm (23½ x 18"), with large margins. 'Scarcity' with surface wear in inscription area and margins. 'Plenty' with worming in inscription area and some wear in margins.
A rare pair of scenes after Henry Singleton (1766-1839) which contrast British wealth with food shortages in India at a time of famine in Bengal between 1769-1770. 'British Plenty' shows a single seaman between two women who, although they appear to be selling the man vegetables, are marked as prostitutes by their fine dresses. In contrast, 'Scarcity in India' depicts two young Englishmen offering cheap trinkets to a young Indian girl outside an impoverished village.
