Parchment portfolio gilt, no 22 of a large paper issue of 25, containing 10 colour photogravures, proofs signed in pencil by the artist and blind stamped, with title and contents. Issue label on front pastedown, numbered and signed in ink by Brangwyn. 4pp. prospectus extra. Portfolio, title and contents worn, distressed, plates in good condition, but 'Fruit' lacks title label pasted on reverse.
Ten plates illustrating porters in the London docks, including Rug Porters, Meat, Tea & Suger, Curios & Coal.. According to the contents: 'The reproductions are from the cartoons for the Paintings executed in 1913-1914 for Lloyd's Register, in the City of London'. The ten paintings in tempura decorated the committee luncheon room until the late 1960s when they were put into storage and subsequently lost!

A proof state of one of the finest 18th century images: a scene of fashionably-dressed people promenading and listening to musicians in Carlton House gardens, under tall leafy trees with no sign of the house. At the centre is George, Prince of Wales, in a tricorn hat and with a lady on each arm. A group of musicians are on the far left, one playing a small trumpet. The Prince of Wales gave the ballad singers breakfast in his garden, where they were all drawn from life on the spot by Bunbury. According to De Vesme and Calabi, Bartolozzi only engraved the faces of the figures.

Rare etching, working proof from the unfinished plate, laid paper. Image 450 x 650mm (17¾ x 25½"). Trimmed within plate, and to image on three sides. Centrefold crease and nicks to extremities.
An interesting progress proof impression, before the plate was engraved with fine detail. The published state carries the following full title and inscription "TO THE King's most Excellent Majesty, This View of the Royal Dock Yard at CHATHAM. / Is by PERMISSION and with all Humility, Inscribed By His MAJESTY's most dutiful Subject and Servant, / Rich.d Paton. / [far left] Printed by Hocquet. Size of the Picture 4. ft 10. in by 3. ft 4. in / Publish'd by Royal Authority & as the Law directs London Feb.y 14.th 1775. To be had of R. Paton Wardour Street, Soho. " A fine prospect of Chatham dockyard, Kent, bustling with activity: ships on the water, some in in dry-dock on the far shore, a skeleton of a ship being built to the right of them; carpenters and blacksmiths working on the near bank in the foreground. Two men try to drag a pig across a plank over a gully (lower left) to where people are loading food and drink onto a small ship. The busy docks stretch along the river bend witht he infantry barracks and the Commissioner's House centre right. Richard Paton (1717 - 1791) painted five views of the royal dockyards, in the Royal Collection, in all of which the figures were painted by John Hamilton Mortimer. In 1776 he exhibited at the Royal Academy the views of Rochester and of Deptford docks.

A sea monster, a bull with fins and a fish tail, causes Hippolytus to be thrown from his chariot and be dragged to his death. A scene from Ovid's retelling of the Greek myth, eventually published May 7th. 1797.

Rare proof mezzotint. 255 x 350mm (10 x 13¾"), with large margins. Small rust spot in lower right corner.
The Courts of God; A city, seen above an open court surrounded by colonnades, full of angels, with several in the foreground. Two are facing each other, playing harps. Fully lettered proof impression. From a series of prints illustrating John Milton's (1608-1674) 'Paradise Lost', first published in 1667, consisting of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse. The poem concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Begun by early 1824, this series of engravings was the result of a comission from a little known American publisher Septimus Prowett, who approached Martin to produce mezzotint illustrations to accompany an issue of Milton's text. Prowett's publication was released in four different proof forms; this print is from the 'Imperial Folio Edition' but not bound up at publication time.

Engraving. Proof before letters. Extremely rare unfinished plate before before aquating. Plate: 320 x 500mm (12½ x 19¾"), with wide margins. Tear in left edge into plate. Diagonal creases through left top and bottom creases.
An allegorical scene featuring the major political figures involved with the passing of the Reform Bill. The image is split into two halves with King William IV seated in the centre holding a scroll which on the completed print reads 'Reform Bill passed June 7th'. Supporters of the bill are shown on the left under the eye of knowledge on the far left is Lord Cleveland, then Bougham in a wig and gown, Lord Cleveland, Russell, Whig Prime Minster Charles Grey and Althorp. On the right are the opposers, stood under a large skeleton Wellington in his uniform is shown on the left pointing a breaking sword at the king, then Lyndhurst and Bishop Philpotts whose mitre is falling off. The Reform bill changed the criteria for having the vote, it also enfanchised the ever growing industrial cities of Leeds and Manchester and got rid of rotten boroughs. M. Dorothy George notes that no general illumination was held and that the ratepayer at 14 Catherine Street at the time was a billiard table maker.
