An old man sat in a chair facing view with a large beard; a map on the wall. 'The Tablet' of 27th June 1874 reports on the Royal Academy Exhibition: 'Mr. Ouless produces three works, the principal being a superbly painted head of Mr. William Sale. The flesh tones are admirable, and the feeling of the entire works forms a strong contrast to the number of painted shadows on the walls'.

Portrait of George Thompson, three-quarter length; standing to right, with head turned to look towards front; wearing a long coat, white shirt, and dark striped neckerchief; on left, a table covered with cloth, with inkwell and pen, sheet of paper, and books lettered in scraped lettering "Oriental Herald 14 1827", Friend of India Vol III", and "American Antislave Magazine". George Donisthorpe Thompson (1804-1878) was British ant-slavery orator and activist who worked towards the abolition of slavery through tours and legislation while serving as a Member of Parliament. He was arguably one of the most important abolitionists and human rights lecturers in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), author of 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina', from Il'ya Repin's 1901 full-length portrait of Tolstoy, barefooted (St Petersburg, State Museum), cropping the composition to the sitter's upper body. Repin (1844-1930), the foremost exponent of the late 19th century Russian Realist style, first met Tolstoy in 1880 and produced several portraits of him.
