Blind - Man's Buff.

Very fine engraving, pen letter state. 510 x 640mm (20 x 25¼"), with wide margins, uncut. Damage to lower edge of sheet.
A lively interior scene. A blindfolded man feels his way around a room, as many adults and children try to remain out of his reach. A small boy cheekily tugs on the blindfolded man’s jacket. David Wilkie (1785-1841) painted the original oil version of ‘Blind Man’s Buff’ in 1812. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year, having been commissioned by the Prince Regent (later George IV), who paid the considerable sum of 500 guineas for the work. The painting remains in the Royal Collection today. An oil sketch, made in preparation for the work, is in the Tate Collection.

Engraving after the painting by Frederick Goodall (1822-1904). Goodall was taught by his artist father, Edward, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1838. After painting landscapes and rural scenes early in his career, a trip to Egypt in 1858-9 led to a change in direction. Thereafter Goodall painted mainly scenes from Egyptian life with Biblical associations. Goodall was elected RA in 1864 and enjoyed great popularity during this time, but his fortunes later declined greatly and in 1902 he was declared bankrupt.

Several figures and soldiers are seen surrounding Jephthah, attending the scene. A crest with unicorns and a snake is below the image. Lettered below with titles and a dedication to Eduard Colbert. After French historical painter Antoine Coypel (1661 - 1722).

Striking and impressive view of the Thames from beneath the arch nearest the south bank of Blackfriars Bridge, looking towards London Bridge. Albion Mills is to the right, with St Paul's on the opposite bank at far left; prospect includes several spires of City of London churches, the Monument, and various rowing and sailing boats on the river, with a group of adults and children in the foreground around a fire. By John William Edy (1760 - 1820).
