A wide street in Bombay, India, after a watercolour by Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-1869). Born in Gdansk, Hildebrandt travelled constantly, including visits to the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam (Thailand), Macao, Hong Kong, China, The Philippines, Japan and the United States. He worked mainly in watercolours, and his paintings were exhibited in London in 1866 and at the Crystal Palace in 1868, just a year before his death in Berlin. A folio of chromolithographs, mounted in imitation of watercolour presentation, was published as 'Reise um die Erde', (Journey around the World).

Extraordinary long view of Istanbul originally published in the 'Reizen' (1698) of Dutch artist Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/7). De Bruyn first visited Egypt and Asia Minor in the 1670s, where he gathered the information that informed the travelogue (with over 200 plates) 'Reizen van Corn. de Bruyn door de vermaardste deelen van Klein Asia, de eylanden Scio, Rhodus, Cyprus enz. mitsg. de voornaamste steden van Aegypten, Syrien en Palestina', published in Delft in 1698. After supervising the publication and its French translation (Delft, 1700), de Bruyn set off on another long voyage, from 1701-08. This time he travelled to Russia, Persia and the East Indies, and the travels led to another large volume, 'orn.de Bruins Reizen over Moskovie door Persie en Indie, verrykt met 300 konstplaten, vertoonende . . . voor al derz. oudheden, en wel voornamentlyk heel uitvoerig die van het . . .hof van Persepolis' (Amsterdam, 1711). Thereafter he restricted his travels to visiting friends in the Netherlands.

It was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences. He specifically lists the Temple of Solomon as one of his inspirations for the Karlskirche.

Meares, trading in furs from the Pacific north-west to Asia without the necessary licence from the East India Company, caused the Nootka Crisis of 1789, in which Spain and Britain came to the brink of war over sovereignty of Pacific Canada. One of the immediate consequences was the Vancouver Expedition of 1791-5.

A steamship and rowing boats at Queen's Wharf, Melbourne, Australia. In the 1850s Queen’s Wharf became the gateway to the goldfields. Standing here you could have seen the steamers ferrying passengers from ships anchored in Port Phillip Bay, and heard the babble of tongues — English, Scottish, Irish, American, German, Chinese — as the newcomers claimed their baggage and set out to look for lodgings in the nearby hotels and boarding houses. From the 'The Melbourne album : containing a series of views of Melbourne & country districts : respectfully dedicated to, and patronized by His Excellency Sir Charles Darling', published by Charles Troedel 1864'. Francois Cogné (1829 - 1883), a French artist, worked in Australia from 1856 to 1864.

Two scenes of the catastrophic fire in New York by Nicolino Calyo, an Italian artist who had emigrated from Italy in 1834 and was an eyewitness to these events. The following day 'The Herald' wrote, with typical hyberbole: 'Talk not to us of the burning of Moscow - the property there lost, was nothing in comparison to that yesterday in New York. The great fire in London is equally unimportant [...] We state here, in the mass, that nearly twenty blocks of valuable buildings are destroyed - five hundred and twenty-nine rich stores [...] all involving a ruin of two thousand merchants, half a dozen of Insurance Companies-and turning out of employment probably five or eight thousand persons, in the capacity of clerks, porters, carmen, &c. &c. The value of the property is variously estimated at from fifteen to fifty millions of dollars'. When advertising these prints the publisher, Lewis P. Clover, the publisher, wrote: 'These beautiful ruins are fast disappearing, and in a few months no vestige of them will be left: in a few years, they will linger as a dream in the memory of the present generation, and the recollection of the most disastrous fire that ever befell this city will, like all earthly things, pass into oblivion'. These ruins include (Bank of America): the Fulton Insurance Company, the New York American building & The Merchants' Exchange; (Exchange Place) Old Garden Street Church.

Prospect of Shiraz, now part of Iran. Plate from the Dutch artist and writer Cornelis de Bruyn's (1652-1727) 'Travels into Muscovy, Persia, and part of the East-Indies', as the 1737 English translation was titled. At the time of de Bruyn's visit the city was in decline: he wrote in his text that 'most of the buildings of this city are in ruins, and the streets so narrow and dirty, that they are hardly passible in rainy seasons'. However, under the rule of Karim Khan Zand, who made the city his capital in 1762, Shiraz returned to prosperity.

From 1808 to 1874, Freetown served as the capital of British West Africa and as the base for the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron, which was charged with enforcing the ban on the slave trade.

White Sulphur Springs, a city in Greenbrier County, now West Virginia, which became popular as a summer retreat because of its elevation of 1,800 feet. As early as 1778 people came to 'take the waters' of the sulphur spring and the resort of 'Greenbriar' evolved from the 1850s. The oldest organized golf club in the country is the nearby Oakhurst Links, founded in 1884. The German artist Edward Beyer traveled through the US between l848 and l857. His 'Album of Virginia' recorded Virginia's landscape, especially spa towns, in the decade before the Civil War.
