Cameo bust portrait in profile of Thomas Clarkson (1760 - 1846), slavery abolitionist. Thomas Clarkson devoted his life to abolitionism. His An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species (1786) brought him into association with Granville Sharp, William Wilberforce and other opponents of slavery; Clarkson joined them in forming a society for the abolition of the slave trade. He visited British ports to collect facts for his pamphlet A Summary View of the Slave Trade and of the Probable Consequences of Its Abolition (1787), and the evidence that he gathered was used in the antislavery campaign led by Wilberforce in Parliament. In 1807, a bill for the abolition of the slave trade finally was passed, and the next year Clarkson's two-volume history of the trade was published. A man rides a galloping horse, unable to stop, his wig flying off. A scene from William Cowper's comic ballad, which was inspired by a draper of Cheapside. Attempting to ride to the Bell Inn, Edmonton, Gilpin lost control of his horse and over-shot his destination by ten miles, arriving in Ware. Written in 1782 the poem was extremely popular, with pirate editions of the book and even John Gilpin toys, an early example of merchandising. Editions have been illustrated by artists as diverse as Randolph Caldecott and Ronald Searle.

Hannah More (1745 - 1833) writer and philanthropist. More's conservative and paternalist views, expressed, in prose, verse and religious and political writings, long saw her dismissed as merely the reactionary antithesis of her contemporary Mary Wollstonecraft, although she is now increasingly recognized as a unique public figure in late Georgian Britain. Engraving after the 1822 portrait by H.W. Pickersgill, now in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

He formulated the plan to settle freed slaves in Sierra Leone, and founded the St George's Bay Company, a forerunner of the Sierra Leone Company. His efforts led to both the founding of the Province of Freedom, and later on Freetown, Sierra Leone, and is thus considered to be one of the founding fathers of Sierra Leone. Taken from a white glass medallion by Catherine Andras (1775-1860).

Cameo bust portrait in profile of William Wilberforce (1759 - 1833), an evangelical Christian and social reformer who dedicated himself to the 'suppression of the Slave Trade and the reformation of manners'. He entered Parliament in 1780 as a Tory MP and was the Parliamentary leader of the Abolition movement from 1787. After years of campaigning, Wilberforce's bill to end Britain's part in slave trading was passed to a standing ovation in 1807. A further act of 1833 provided for the emancipation of slaves in British colonies. After sculptor and medallist Catherine Andras (1775 - 1860).
