Head and shoulders, right pose, full face; in oval on pedestal, with coat-of-arms. Lorenz Hesiter (1683-1758) was a German anatomist, surgeon and botanist. In 1707 he was an assistant physician in the field hospitals at Brussels and Ghent during the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1711 he was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Altdorf, and then in 1720 he was made professor of anatomy and surgery at Helmstadt. W: 1346-4. A woman sits holding a lute in her hand, an open music book on her knee, she leans her elbow on a cushion resting on a table and looks at a parrot in a bird stand. A small dog jumps up on the back of her skirts.
