The SS Great Western of 1838 was purpose built for crossing the Atlantic and the initial unit of the Great Western Steamship Company. Her maiden voyage left Bristol on 8th April 1838. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was the model for all successful wooden Atlantic paddle-steamers.
