Charles II sent Betterton to Paris to study improvements to stage craft, introducing shifting scenes rather than tapestry to the English theatre. He and his actress wife, Mary Saunderson, were regarded as respectable in a period when acting was seen as indecent, and were invited to teach the children from noble and royal families to perform John Crowne's Calisto, 1675, in the last Stuart court Masque.

Following the execution of his father Charles I, he was forced into exile but returned with the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 (as alluded to be the vignette below his coat of arms, showing his triumphant return to London). One of many engravings of Charles II after Sir Godfrey Kneller. Following the death of Sir Peter Lely in 1680, Kneller became the undoubted favourite court painter of the king. After Charles II died in 1685, Kneller easily fought of competition from William Wissing and John Riley to maintain his position under the new king, James II.

Queen Charlotte (right) was in Bath at the time and received the address of the Bath Corporation (to which she attends here with avid attention) at almost the same time as news of Princess Charlotte's death. A messenger (centre) delivers both pieces of news, Queen Charlotte taking the former and Princess Charlotte's husband Leopold I of Belgium responding to the latter.

A messenger (centre) delivers both pieces of news, Queen Charlotte taking the former and Princess Charlotte's husband Leopold I of Belgium responding to the latter.

Plate 1 of a set of four by the same artist, imitations of a set by James Gillray (see 7773), but with the addition of a third man, who wears fashionable London dress, and has a blunderbuss and a small mongrel. The fat city sportsman has a bulldog with a spiked collar. They find a hare, crouching by a tree. Lettered below image with speech of characters; fat man says 'you may as well let me try', the next man raises his blunderbuss to smite, saying, 'No No I'm sure I can knock him down with the butt end'. The third man (to right) says to the dogs: 'hey at him there.' By Charles Williams (1797 - 1830). He was a prolific etcher of satires of his own or others' designs (especially Woodward). Almost all his plates are anonymous and their identification needs much more work: many of the attributions to him by Dorothy George need to be revisited.
